The television series Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter, is deeply emotional and marked by numerous tragic deaths, including that of Tara (played by Maggie Siff). However, her character’s descent is subtly foreshadowed in the show’s initial season, making her story all the more poignant. This gritty drama transports audiences to the fictional town of Charming, California, where the titular motorcycle club holds sway. The series revolves around Jackson “Jax” Teller (portrayed by Charlie Hunnam), who serves as the club’s Vice President and later President. Jax’s journey begins upon discovering his father’s manifesto, as he was one of the original founders of SAMCRO.

In the series, “Sons of Anarchy,” we delve not just into the club’s struggles and victories, but also deeply into the personal lives, especially that of Jax. During season 1, Jax rekindles his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Tara, when their newborn son, Abel, requires immediate medical attention. Over time, they get married and welcome another child, Thomas, but their tale takes a tragic turn in “Sons of Anarchy” season 6. Despite this sad ending, the seeds of Tara’s downfall were sown right from the beginning of the series, making her story all the more poignant.

Tara Needed A Safe Place

In the initial episode, Tara Knowles first appears on ‘Sons of Anarchy’. This encounter takes place when Jax’s spouse, Wendy (played by Drea de Matteo), who was pregnant at the time, overdoses and is rushed to the hospital. Tara reveals that an emergency C-section is necessary due to the baby’s premature condition and his additional health issues, which include the Teller heart defect and the effects of the drugs Wendy had been consuming. In this critical moment, Tara manages to save the baby, whom we come to know as Abel. As ‘Sons of Anarchy’ progresses, Tara and Jax grow closer and eventually rekindle their relationship properly.

Prior to the happenings in the series Sons of Anarchy, Tara opted to escape the confines of small-town life in Charming and SAMCRO by relocating to San Diego. Subsequently, she attended medical school in Chicago and completed her internship there as well. In this period, Tara came across ATF agent Josh Kohn (Jay Karnes) and conceived a child, but chose to terminate the pregnancy. As time went on, Kohn grew progressively threatening and abusive, forcing Tara to fight for a restraining order. This harrowing experience prompted her to return to Charming where she believed she would find safety under SAMCRO’s protection. Regrettably, Kohn trailed her back to Charming.

One evening, Kohn intrudes into Tara’s room, rendering her unconscious before attempting a sexual assault. However, she regains consciousness and feigns submission as she grabs for his gun. In self-defense, Tara manages to shoot Kohn in the abdomen and contacts Jax while he bleeds profusely on the floor. After explaining the potential consequences of summoning an ambulance, Jax ends Kohn’s life by shooting him in the head. Later, he disposes of the body.

Tara & Jax’s Marriage Leads To Her Ultimate Demise

Tara Wasn’t Entirely Safe With SAMCRO

In her bid to flee a harmful and life-threatening bond, Tara finds herself entangled in something even more intricate and risky. Although she discovers security with Charming and SAMCRO under Jax’s wing, rekindling her relationship with Jax introduces fresh complications. Jax’s mother, Gemma (played by Katey Sagal), accepts Tara only when it suits her, ultimately leading Tara to be embroiled in their family conflicts and some of the club’s issues unwillingly.

Tara’s decline starts in ‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 5 following a bogus kidnap attempt that leaves her with an injured hand potentially jeopardizing her career. Subsequently, Tara becomes part of a scheme to thwart a RICO case, which leads her to penetrate Stockton State Prison to converse with Otto (Sutter). This decisive move initiates her downfall, as a nurse’s murder, the entrance of her vengeful sibling, and Gemma’s impulsiveness eventually result in Tara being slain by Gemma in season 6. Had she not reunited with Jax, this tragic outcome might have been avoided.

Jax Contributed To Tara’s Downfall

In a different turn of phrase: Gemma is responsible for fatally stabbing Tara with an ice pick in Jax’s house, yet Tara’s blood is also found on Jax’s hands. Despite her attempts to aid her, Jax persuades Tara into the plot to connect with Otto and encourages her to carry on working at the prison. It is following the nurse’s murder that Tara starts to ponder over her life with Jax and SAMCRO.

Given how fiercely protective, impulsive, and vindictive his mother is, Jax does not manage to exonerate Tara in Gemma’s eyes. In fact, Gemma ends up killing Tara, believing she had betrayed Jax and the club. Tara’s death leaves Jax devastated, and he spends the entire final season of Sons of Anarchy seeking retribution. Tara had fled from a harmful relationship in search of solace and security in Charming, but her return only set the stage for something intricate and fatal.
