The Taormina Film Festival in Italy will honor its Sicilian backdrop by commemorating the 25-year anniversary of Giuseppe Tornatore’s passionate period film “Malena,” which kick-started Monica Bellucci’s global acting career.
The well-known event, now led by marketing expert Tiziana Rocca once more, is planning to showcase a restored version of a movie about a 13-year-old boy’s fascination with a seductive figure from a small town in Sicily during World War II. This film unfolds as the tragic journey of a woman suffering for her beauty, and it displays an image of Monica Bellucci from “Malena” on its promotional material.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that this year’s Taormina Film Festival poster is dedicated in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Malena’s release. This timeless masterpiece has etched a permanent mark on contemporary Italian cinema. In a testament to its enduring impact, Malena delicately and poetically painted a portrait of a woman, her allure, and her solitude, leaving an indelible imprint on our collective imagination.
With Rocca’s latest authority, the festival will now consist of three distinct parts: an International Feature Film Contest, a non-competitive segment, and special occurrences.

Under Rocca’s new leadership, the festival will be structured into three main areas: an International Feature Film Competition, a section outside of competition, and special events.
As a film enthusiast penning my thoughts post-October 1st, 2024, I’ve found myself in the privileged position of reviewing some truly remarkable feature films that have made their Italian debuts. In this exclusive Italian premiere competition, only the cream of the crop will be considered for selection. The prestigious international jury will bestow a trio of awards: the Best Film accolade, the recognition for Best Actress, and the honor for Best Actor. It’s an exciting time for cinema lovers as we eagerly await these cinematic marvels to grace our screens.
Since the mid-1950s, this summer festival has been hosted in a Sicilian resort that American audiences may recognize as the setting for “The White Lotus” Season 2. Notably, it features an impressive open-air amphitheater dating back to ancient Greek times, which can seat around 8,000 people, and is situated beneath the imposing Mt. Etna volcano. Distinguished guests who have attended this festival include Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Federico Fellini, Pedro Almodovar, and Tom Cruise.
The 71st edition of the Taormina Film Festival will run June 10-14
