Tango Gameworks Saved By PUBG Publisher Krafton, Hi-Fi Rush Rights Also Acquired

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing the news that Tango Gameworks has been acquired by Krafton Inc. On one hand, it’s a relief to know that the brilliant minds behind Hi-Fi Rush will continue to create innovative and captivating games. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the days when Tango was under Microsoft’s wing.

In May, Microsoft closed down Tango Gameworks, a studio that had been active for almost 15 years and was responsible for hits like the 2023 surprise sensation Hi-Fi Rush. But fear not! Seoul-based publisher Krafton Inc. has come to the rescue by announcing they’ve acquired both Tango Gameworks and the intellectual property rights for Hi-Fi Rush from Microsoft.

According to Krafton’s official announcement, the agreement enables Tango to carry on developing the Hi-Fi-Rush IP and investigate potential future endeavors. Notably, this development won’t affect other Tango projects such as The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo, which will still be under Microsoft’s purview.

On Monday morning in Seoul, which corresponds to Sunday evening in North America, Krafton announced its acquisition. This move, according to Krafton, underscores their commitment to expanding globally and enriching their content portfolio with innovative, high-quality games. When contacted by Windows Central, a Microsoft representative stated that they are collaborating with Krafton to allow Tango Gameworks to continue developing games together, and eagerly anticipate playing their next masterpiece.

Back in May, Tango Gameworks, along with Alpha Dog Games, Roundhouse Games, and Arkane Austin, were among four studios closed down by Microsoft. The reason for these closures was stated in a company-wide email as a need to free up resources to boost investments in other areas of their portfolio and concentrate on their key game projects. In simpler terms, they wanted to focus more on important games and allocate funds elsewhere.

In January 2023, Hi-Fi Rush made its unexpected debut on Xbox and PC platforms following the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct event. Later this year, it also became available for PlayStation 5, joining other games developed by Microsoft Studios such as Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves.
