Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, has been in several popular projects, but none have been as successful as her 2025 film. Despite being available for streaming, the movie continues to be incredibly popular online.
The thriller The Housemaid became a big hit in cinemas and continued to perform well online. Released in theaters on December 19th, it became available digitally on February 13th and quickly rose to the top of the charts. Now, two years later, The Housemaid is once again the No. 1 movie on Amazon, surpassing Avatar: Fire and Ash.
The Housemaid Was a Massive Phenomenon
Sydney Sweeney’s popular thriller is now a huge hit on Amazon worldwide. It’s topping the charts not only in the U.S., but also in countries like Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, and the UK, where it’s currently the number one movie.
Since its release on February 13th, The Housemaid has consistently remained the most popular book. It recently continued its winning streak, easily holding onto the top spot despite the release of new titles like Marty Supreme, Zootopia 2, and Wuthering Heights. None of these newcomers could challenge its dominance for long.
The film launched on April 19th and has been the most popular title ever since. As a Pay-1 release – meaning the streaming service had the first opportunity to offer it – it also attracted the highest number of new subscriptions.
Based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, The Housemaid tells the story of Millie Calloway, a young woman trying to escape a difficult past. She takes a job cleaning for a rich family, but quickly finds herself in a strange and unsettling situation when she’s given a bedroom in the attic that can only be locked from the outside.
The movie was a huge hit, earning $398.2 million globally on a $35 million production budget, according to The Numbers. Critics generally liked it, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 73%, while audiences loved it even more, with a ‘Verified Hot’ score of 92%.
The Housemaid 2 Is Already in Development
The popular erotic thriller was a quick hit in cinemas, and Lionsgate announced a sequel within weeks. Author Freida McFadden has already written two additional books continuing the story, and the next film will be based on her novel, The Housemaid’s Secret.
The highly anticipated sequel is already receiving positive attention and has confirmed the return of several key players. This includes Sweney, Michele Morrone, director Paul Feig, and writer Rebecca Sonnenshine.
Following the success of her novel The Housemaid, author Freida McFadden’s upcoming film adaptation is now in development. She recently signed on to adapt The Caregiver, and David Bruckner, known for The Night House, will direct. Michael Bay and Brad Fuller will produce the film.
The Housemaid is streaming on Starz.
