Sydney Sweeney Gained More Than 30 Pounds, Trained for ‘Three and a Half Months’ for Christy Martin Biopic: ‘My Boobs Got Bigger. And My Butt Got Huge’

In a recent interview with W Magazine, Sydney Sweeney discussed the significant physical change she underwent while preparing to portray boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biography, stating that her body had undergone a complete transformation following several rigorous months of training.

In an interview, Sweeney shared that she joined the project to portray Christy, and her training period lasted roughly three and a half months. Each day, she would begin with an hour of weightlifting, followed by two hours of kickboxing in the afternoon, and then another hour of weightlifting in the evening. Additionally, she started incorporating regular eating into her routine.

W also noted that the actor gained more than 30 pounds for the role.

Sweeney remarked, “My body underwent a significant transformation. None of my clothes seemed to fit me anymore. Normally, I wear a size 23 in jeans, but I found myself wearing a size 27. My bust grew larger and so did my posterior. It was astonishing! I exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness!’

She added, “But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

In a yet-to-be-named sports biography, Sweeney is set to play Martin, under the direction of David Michod. Michod collaborated with Mirrah Foulkes on the script. This film will recount the journey of Martin, who became America’s most renowned female boxer in the 1990s, climbing up from obscurity to the top ranks.

From 1989 until 2012, Martin excelled as a professional athlete, eventually claiming the title of world champion in the super welterweight division in 2009. However, her life took a dark turn in 2010 when her husband, James Martin, tried to take it all away from her. In their Florida home, he viciously attacked her, inflicting stab wounds and gunshot injuries. Despite the attempted murder, she survived. James was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder in 2012 and was sentenced to serve 25 years behind bars.

In October 2024, Sweeney posted photos on Instagram showing her as Martin. She wrote, “Over the last few months, I’ve been deeply engrossed in preparing to bring this inspiring woman’s tale to life – a fearless warrior who battled not just within the ring, but also beyond it. Her journey symbolizes resilience, strength, and hope, and it’s an honor for me to take on her role to tell her empowering story to you all. More details will be coming soon 🙂 CHRISTY MARTIN.
