As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt and having seen the evolution of Hollywood from black and white to color, I must say that “Scandalous” seems like a captivating project that promises to shed light on an intriguing chapter of Hollywood history. Colman Domingo stepping into the director’s chair for the first time is an exciting prospect, given his impressive background in both acting and television directing.
Colman Domingo is poised for his first attempt as a feature film director with “Scandalous,” a drama set in the 1950s portraying the romantic involvement between famous actress Kim Novak and singer Sammy Davis Jr., and the intolerant judgment they encountered when their relationship became public knowledge. Discussions are ongoing for Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson to assume the roles of the main characters.
I’m eagerly looking forward to the rapid progress of the intriguing project that’s currently underway, still in its infantile stages of production. The producers are optimistic about commencing filming next year once Domingo and Sweeney have wrapped up their roles in HBO’s “Euphoria” third season.
Novak and Davis initially crossed paths when they were both invited as guests on “The Steve Allen Show” in 1956. Over the following year, Davis would occasionally drop by the set of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Vertigo”. They reconnected at a Thanksgiving charity event in California, which eventually led to them celebrating the holidays together. However, Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures where Novak was contracted, expressed concerns about their relationship.
In 1958, a Chicago newspaper columnist revealed to the world details about the relationship between Davis and Novak, hinting they were set to marry. However, Novak swiftly denied these claims publicly. A short while later, Davis wed Loray White, a Black chorus singer; their marriage lasted only a year. In 1965, Novak tied the knot with white actor Richard Johnson; they eventually parted ways. Years after that, in 1976, Novak married Robert Malloy and stayed with him until his passing in 2021. Now, at the age of 91, Novak continues to live on. Davis passed away in 1990 at the age of 64.
Domingo has helmed episodes of television before, but “Scandalous” would mark his first feature film behind the camera. Sweeney is coming off of the Glen Powell rom-com “Anyone but You,” Sony’s Marvel spin-off “Madame Web” and the indie horror feature “Immaculate.” She is currently shooting a biopic about boxer Christy Martin ahead of a planned return to “Euphoria” in 2025. Jonsson most recently appeared in “Alien: Romulus,” with other credits including the romance “Rye Lane” and a main role across the first two seasons of HBO’s “Industry.”
Deadline was first to report news of the project.
