Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried Share Terrifying ‘The Housemaid’ Trailer at CinemaCon: ‘We Created Some Wacky S—‘

In a revealing first glance at CinemaCon, director Paul Feig’s adaptation of Freida McFadden’s hit novel “The Housemaid” was unveiled, showcasing a chilling atmosphere. The movie features Sydney Sweeney as the housemaid Millie, serving a seemingly idyllic family headed by Amanda Seyfried as Nina, an emotionally unstable woman, and Brandon Sklenar as her charismatic spouse. However, appearances can be deceiving with this affluent couple, as a hidden truth emerges, further complicated by Millie’s secrets she desperately wants to keep concealed.

Initially, Sweeney grabbed “The Housemaid” as it was number one on the best-seller lists, and found himself unable to stop reading it.

Sweeney expressed her enjoyment for the numerous unforeseen surprises in the story. She found the complex and flawed characters intriguing.”

This version maintains the original sentiment while using more polite language to describe the characters’ flaws, making it easier for a broader audience to understand and relate to.

Seyfried shared her co-star’s excitement about the unexpected twists and turns in the production, saying, “I found myself going to places I wouldn’t have thought possible.” She added, “As actors, we ventured into territories I’ve never explored before…we concocted some outrageous scenes…the things that transpired during filming were truly bizarre.

From the video clips provided for theater owners, the situation escalates rapidly into chaos. There are scenes depicting a blood-soaked Sweeney brandishing an oversized kitchen knife and later savoring a sandwich with a chilling enthusiasm that suggests murder. Additionally, there are numerous instances of Sklenar and Seyfried showing affection for their lavish home. The couple frequently switch between passionate moments and domestic discord; at one point, an ambulance appears in their driveway, its flashing lights suggesting a dark event has transpired just moments ago. All this unfolds to the melancholic tune of Nico’s song.

In contrast to his usual genre of comedy films such as “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat,” which have made him a consistent box office success, “The Housemaid” represents a shift in direction for Feig. However, he has also been involved with the smartly-crafted thrillers “A Simple Favor” and its upcoming sequel, “Another Simple Favor.

“I love thrillers,” Feig said. “iI’s all I watch. Ironically, I don’t watch much comedy.”

As a movie enthusiast, I find an intriguing commonality between thrillers and comedies – they both culminate in a climactic moment when the tension is finally resolved or released.

Sweeney, who gained prominence in shows like “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus”, has now established himself as a leading actor in films, gracing the screen in successful movies such as “Anyone but You” and “Immaculate”. Seyfried is known for her Oscar nomination for “Mank” and Emmy win for her chilling portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout”. She’s also recognized for roles in films like “Mamma Mia!” and “Les Misérables”. Additionally, Sklenar can be seen on the small screen in “1923”, alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. This spring, she also starred alongside Meghann Fahy in “Drop.

Following the tremendous success of her initial “Housemaid” novel, McFadden has penned several more books in this series. This week, Lionsgate unveiled a trailer for it at CinemaCon, a trade show catering to theater owners, which is happening in Las Vegas.

“The Housemaid” will open in theaters on December 25, 2025,.

“Let me just say you guys have a big hit coming,” Feig promised theater owners at CinemaCon.

That’s music to their ears.
