Sydney Film Festival Unveils 72nd Edition With Cannes Selections, World Premieres

The 72nd Sydney Film Festival has unveiled its complete schedule, presenting an impressive roster of 201 films from 70 different nations. This lineup features 17 world debuts, 6 international premieres, and 137 Australian first-showings, spread across various locations, with the iconic Sydney Opera House added as a fresh screening spot this year.

Festival organizer Nashen Moodley unveiled the schedule, which will showcase fifteen films fresh from Cannes, including “It Was Just an Accident” by Jafar Panahi and Kelly Reichardt’s art heist drama set in the 1970s, titled “The Mastermind.

According to Moodley, the 2025 festival will present a daring and wide-ranging perspective on cinema, featuring movies that tackle the pressing issues of our times while also celebrating the captivating allure of creativity and storytelling.

Other notable features include the film “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston, the satirical comedy “Slanted” by debut Australian director Amy Wang, who won at SXSW, the comedy “Twinless” from Sundance, and “On Swift Horses,” which stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi.

The opening event for the festival will be the first screening in Australia of “Together,” a film penned and helmed by Australian director Michael Shanks, featuring Alison Brie and Dave Franco. This Sundance sensation seamlessly combines everyday family struggles with eerie supernatural aspects.

2021 marks the 17th installment of the Sydney Film Prize’s official competition, offering AUD60,000 ($39,000) to the film that showcases exceptional bravery, innovation, and daringness. The jury is headed by renowned Australian director Justin Kurzel.

Among the captivating lineup, I find myself particularly intrigued by a collection of films that includes “It Was Just an Accident”, “The Mastermind”, the Berlinale Golden Bear-winning “Romería” (by Carla Simón), “The Secret Agent” (Kleber Mendonça Filho), “The Love That Remains” (Hlynur Pálmason), “Mirrors No. 3” (Christian Petzold), “My Father’s Shadow” (Akinola Davies Jr.), “Sorry, Baby” (Eva Victor), “The Blue Trail” (Gabriel Mascaro), the Sundance Audience Award-winner “DJ Ahmet”, “All That’s Left of You” (Cherien Dabis), and the opening night film “Together”.

As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that the Documentary Australia Award is gearing up for an exciting competition this year! A total of 10 fresh Australian documentaries are vying for a $13,000 prize. Among them are some highly anticipated world premieres such as “Floodland,” “Joh: Last King of Queensland,” “Journey Home, David Gulpilil,” “The Raftsmen,” and “Yurlu | Country.”

Other compelling documentaries in the running include “Deeper,” “The Golden Spurtle,” “The Wolves Always Come at Night,” “Songs Inside,” and “Ellis Park.” This diverse lineup promises a captivating exploration of Australia’s rich tapestry, showcasing stories that are as varied and intriguing as the land itself. The festival will exhibit prominent retrospectives such as “Jafar Panahi’s Cinema in Defiance,” which encompasses all 10 of the esteemed Iranian filmmaker’s films, and “Elaine May: Urban Legendary Figure,” highlighting the significant American director’s four cult favorites.

Among the program’s standout features is the $26,000 Sustainable Future Award. Contenders for this prize are “The End,” “Floodland,” “How Deep is Your Love,” “Lowland Kids,” “Nechako — It Will be a Big River Again,” “Only on Earth,” “The Wolves Always Come at Night,” and the short film “Rolly: Story of My Father.

The $22,700 First Nations Award, the largest cash prize for global Indigenous filmmaking, features a selection of movies such as “Emily: I Am Kam,” “The Haka Party Incident,” “Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao e Rua — Two Worlds,” “Nechako — It Will Be a Big River Again,” “Seeds,” “Wilfred Buck,” and “Remaining Native.
