Studio Sycamore, a pioneer in children’s and family animation that combines top-notch animation with classic storytelling, has enlisted seasoned producer Jeremy Latcham (“The Avengers,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”) for their upcoming animated film, “Zita the Spacegirl.” Through his production company, Latcham Pictures, Latcham will take on the role of executive producer. Renowned for producing some of Marvel Studios’ biggest live-action films, “Zita the Spacegirl” will be Latcham’s debut in animation. Andrew Pace from Latcham Pictures, who has worked on “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” is also set to produce the project.
The enchanting graphic novel series “Zita the Spacegirl,” penned by Ben Hatke, is inspired by its number one position on the New York Times bestseller list. It tells the story of a spirited girl who embarks on an extraordinary cosmic journey when her closest friend gets taken by extraterrestrials. As she valiantly seeks to return home and demonstrates selfless heroism, Zita becomes a revered intergalactic figure. This cherished children’s book, published by Macmillan, has amassed more than 20 accolades and recognitions, including the American Library Association Notable Children’s Book, a CYBIL Award, and several “Book of the Year” titles such as those from Kirkus and School Library Journal.
At Sycamore, we hold the conviction that we should narrate enduring stories which resonate with our viewers’ aspirations, and this is what CEO Christian McGuigan expressed. Joining us is Jeremy, a professional who boasts blockbuster-level expertise and an insightful grasp of how tales can touch our emotions deeply. We are elated to have him aid us in breathing life into Zita.
The movie, initially announced by Sycamore Studios’ CEO Christian McGuigan and CCO Timothy Reckart in December 2024, now adds to a growing collection of films based on intellectual properties (IP), such as “Doctor Dolittle” directed by Bob Barlen and Cal Brunker (“Paw Patrol: The Movie,” “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie”).
John Latcham, known for producing films like “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “Bad Times at the El Royale,” currently holds a senior advisory position at The Wonder Project. Here, he’s working on a series of movies, with projects underway at Amazon/MGM and Sony Pictures. Additionally, Latcham has an extensive deal with Hasbro Entertainment, where he’s developing a follow-up to “D&D” and has ongoing projects at Skydance and Lionsgate. Previously, Latcham served as the senior vice president of production and development at Marvel Studios, where he was an executive producer for “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Marvel’s The Avengers,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” He also contributed to “Iron Man” as an associate producer and co-produced “Iron Man 2.”
Latcham expressed his excitement, saying, ‘Animation offers an incredible range of storytelling possibilities, and I’m thrilled to embark on this adventure with Zita the Spacegirl.’ Sycamore Studios, with their fervor and innovative creativity, significantly enhances the project. Their careful approach to storytelling makes them an ideal collaborator in transforming Zita from the written page to the screen.
Latcham is being represented by Warren Dern and Kiley Wong at the law firm, Sloane Offer. The negotiations for this deal were handled by McGuigan and Barndon Milostan from Greenberg Glusker.
