The popular television show “Downton Abbey” appeared to have permanently shut its doors in December 2015 when it concluded its run. However, a successful movie adaptation followed, with the second film “A New Era” seemingly concluding the storyline as Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess, passed away in the final scenes.
In September, we can anticipate the premiere of “Downton Abbey: The Final Chapter,” which reunites many original actors, as well as guest stars Paul Giamatti and Dominic West. Additionally, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, Art Froushan, and others are joining the cast for this new installment.

In September, we’ll be treated to “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” the third movie in the series, which features most of its original cast members along with Paul Giamatti and Dominic West as guest stars. Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, Art Froushan, and other newcomers will also join the cast for this film.
Titled “The Grand Finale,” this upcoming movie is expected to bring a concluding end to the ‘Downton Abbey’ series. Gareth Neame, CEO of Carnival Films (a production company backed by Universal), who has been behind ‘Downton’ since its beginning, emphasized this point at SXSW London.
During a unique conversation at London’s Shoreditch House, moderated by Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne, Neame delved into the intriguing challenge of transforming a popular television series into a film series franchise.
As a cinephile, I’ve always been quite hopeful about its transition to the big screen. To me, the TV show had a cinematic quality that I believed could translate beautifully onto the silver screen.
Instead of having to wear a cast for six months annually, as was the norm for the television series (with Neame mentioning that it was increasingly challenging because they were “becoming well-known and wished to pursue other projects”), the roles demanded the actor’s presence for just 12 weeks every two or two-and-a-half years.
In essence, Neame explained that continuing ‘Downton’ in some practical manner was their initial plan, but they didn’t intend to do it forever. They wanted more than just ending the franchise and ‘Downton Abbey’ altogether. Instead, they desired a satisfying conclusion for the fans. Therefore, the September movie serves as a complete and fitting end to the stories of all those beloved characters in Downton Abbey.
