Global sales rights for the supernatural horror film “The Surrender,” directed by newcomer Julia Max, have been purchased by U.K. company Blue Finch Films. This spine-tingling feature will have its first screening at SXSW, showcased in their Midnighters program.
Colby Minifie (“The Boys”), Emmy-nominated actress Kate Burton (“Grey’s Anatomy”), and Neil Sandilands (“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”) lead the cast in a spine-chilling supernatural story that delves into grief using horror as its medium.
The story revolves around a tense mother-daughter dynamic that gets pushed to its limit when the family head passes away. Overwhelmed by grief, the mother seeks help from an enigmatic figure to bring her spouse back to life. However, this dark resurrection process goes awry, forcing both women to grapple with their disagreements while battling for survival – and potentially against each other.
Max not only served as the director for the project, but also wrote the screenplay and co-produced it with Mia Chang (“It Follows”), Lovell Holder (“Lavender Men”), Ian McDonald (“Woman of the Hour”) and Robert J. Ulrich (“The Boys”). Susan Gelb (“The Howling”), Adam Maffei (“Griffin in Summer”) and Rob Massar (“Peak Season”) were the executive producers for this production.
Max expressed his excitement about collaborating with Blue Finch to share a deeply meaningful tale of his own with global viewers, and he feels privileged to kick off this adventure at SXSW in March.
Obtaining this addition strengthens Blue Finch’s collection of international films. This array already encompasses the Berlinale-winning film “Lesbian Space Princess” and the SXSW selection “Redux Redux,” created by the team behind “The Block Island Sound.” The roster also features the horror movie “825 Forest Road” from the creative minds of “Hell House LLC,” as well as “Zero,” which won at Sitges and was directed by Jean Luc Herbulot. Additionally, it includes the Indonesian horror film “The Draft!”, which was screened at Fantastic Fest.
