Nintendo announced its financial results today, covering the first half of its fiscal year, which ended September 30th. The report showed how well the company is doing, including updated sales numbers for the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. So far, the original Switch has sold 154.01 million units since its release in 2017 – putting it very close to the PlayStation 2’s all-time record of 160 million.
An analyst doesn’t think the Switch will ever sell as much as the PlayStation 2. However, the Switch is on track to become Nintendo’s best-selling console of all time, surpassing the Nintendo DS (which sold 154.02 million units). It only needed about 10,000 more sales to reach that milestone – a milestone it likely hit over a month ago, as sales data is current through September 30th. While it’s almost certain, Nintendo won’t officially confirm this until its next financial report in February 2026, or potentially sooner with a separate announcement.
Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners doesn’t think the Nintendo Switch will likely outsell the PlayStation 2 over its entire lifespan, when asked about the possibility.
Okay, so I’m really excited about the Switch 2! Nintendo now thinks they’ll sell even more of it – they’ve upped their prediction from 15 million to 19 million for this year. But, it looks like sales of the original Switch are slowing down a bit. They originally thought they’d sell 4.5 million units before March 2026, but now they’re estimating closer to 4 million. Still a lot of Switches being played, but it makes sense as everyone starts looking forward to the new one!
Nintendo sold 4.72 million original Switch consoles between April and September, a 60% decrease from the same time last year. This drop in sales was anticipated, as the newer Switch 2 model launched in June 2025.
As of September 30th, the Switch 2 has sold over 10.36 million units. This makes it the fastest-selling console in history for its first four months, exceeding the sales of competitors like the PS5 (7.8 million), PS4 (7.6 million), Wii (5.8 million), DS (5.3 million), and the original Switch (4.74 million) during their comparable launch periods.
