As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia when hearing about Nintendo’s confirmation regarding the backward compatibility of the Switch successor. Having grown up with Nintendo consoles since the NES days, it’s always been a joy to revisit old games on new hardware.
According to Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, it has been verified that the upcoming Switch successor will be capable of running software from the initial Switch console, as well as content accessed through the Switch Online service. Further particulars about this new system will be disclosed at a later time.
In today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, it was revealed that software for the Nintendo Switch can also be played on the upcoming Nintendo Switch console. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online will be accessible on this new console as well. More details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch console, including its compatibility with the current one, will be shared at a future date. (Furukawa, on X)

Last year, Nintendo hinted at the concept of a unified “Nintendo Account” that could simplify the transition to their next console. So far, the Switch hasn’t supported traditional backward compatibility due to its switch from discs used in Wii and Wii U consoles to cartridges. It remains uncertain whether the potential Switch 2 will include a dedicated cartridge slot for original Switch games or if it will adopt a similar approach to backward compatibility seen on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, where digitally purchased games can be downloaded instead.
In its eighth year, the sale of the Switch console appears to be tapering off, with an anticipated announcement about its future within the next five months. To date, over 140 million units have been sold, along with more than a billion Switch games. Nintendo’s latest financial report stated that hardware sales remain steady. Interestingly, after Nintendo adjusted their sales forecast and confirmed the slowdown in Switch sales, their stock took a dip yesterday; however, it experienced a 5.8% increase on November 6th.
Analysts forecast that the unveiling of the Switch 2 might not occur this year, since Nintendo plans to postpone its release until after the holiday season, so as to prevent drawing attention away from their current platform during a profitable period.
