Switch 2 Specs Reveal Docked VRR Is Not Supported At Launch

The specifications for the upcoming Switch 2 prior to its release have been disclosed, and one persistent question has been addressed – the Switch 2 won’t be equipped with a variable refresh rate feature during its initial launch phase, if at all in docked mode.

Digital Foundry has shared a comprehensive analysis of the technical specifications of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This includes additional insights into the console’s unique custom Nvidia processor, as well as resources developers can utilize when creating software for the Switch 2. The technical overview also verified that VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) functionality will be available only in handheld mode, and not during docking.

It’s been somewhat puzzling about the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature for the Switch 2initially, it was announced that the console would support VRR when used with a VRR-compatible screen in dock mode. However, subsequent references to VRR on the Nintendo website have disappeared, as noted by Digital Foundry, leading to uncertainty about whether the console will actually offer VRR functionality.

The concept of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) emerged along with HDMI 2.1, enabling devices to sync their refresh rate with compatible displays to eliminate stuttering or tearing caused by inconsistent frame rates. This technology has been employed on Xbox for some time now, while the PS5 introduced VRR support approximately a year following its launch.

Given that the Switch 2 was unveiled with the promise of docked Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, it appears probable that this functionality will be implemented in the console at a later date; however, it’s not expected to be available when the Switch 2 goes on sale on June 5.
