In simple terms, as soon as pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 became available in the U.S., there’s been a significant issue of resellers overpricing the console due to high demand, a phenomenon known as scalping.
On April 2, Nintendo unveiled the full details of the Switch 2, and following some initial setbacks, pre-orders for this upcoming next-generation hybrid console became available in the United States on April 24.
As a dedicated fan, I appreciate the measures taken by the company to prevent scalping on the My Nintendo Store. They’ve established certain conditions that fans need to fulfill before making purchases. However, there’s been some speculation among us about how these restrictions will hold up once other retailers start selling the same items.
Immediately following its launch in the U.S., eBay was flooded with sellers offering pre-orders at significantly higher prices than the retail value.
Nintendo has a scalper problem
The standard version of the Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 in stores, while the package that includes Super Mario Kart World retails for $499.99.
From the break of dawn on April 24th, I found myself, alongside countless other enthusiasts, eagerly awaiting the pre-order process for the new console at both Walmart and Target. As soon as the clock struck midnight, we pounced on the websites, only to find that the console was flying off the digital shelves faster than we could add it to our carts. It’s safe to say that the anticipation among fans has reached a fever pitch!
A short while later, eBay listings started fetching prices up to $850 for the Switch 2 and its accompanying Pro controller, a significant $300 above the regular price. Similarly, combinations of the console with Mario Kart World have reached as high as $734, which is approximately $200 beyond the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).
Additionally, it’s been reported that some users have posted fraudulent product listings for the hypothetical Switch 2 at its retail value, supposedly as a countermeasure against resellers exploiting the market.
They managed this by merely offering images of the console, tricking bots and resellers into thinking it was the Switch 2 and spending large sums of money on something they thought was a new model.
On the contrary, eBay explicitly forbids creating misleading listings as it breaches their user contract, potentially resulting in a permanent ban from the platform.
