Following the instability in international markets, President Donald Trump has decided to reduce the scope of his initial tariff policy. The tariffs will be notably decreased almost everywhere, with the exception being China. However, it’s yet unclear how this adjustment will affect the planned launch of the Switch 2, which was set to commence pre-orders in the US today.
On Wednesday, Trump announced that tariffs will generally be reduced to 10% in many areas. However, China now faces an elevated tariff rate of 125%. These adjustments take effect immediately. Moreover, Trump declared he is putting a temporary halt on new tariff agreements for a period of 90 days. The deadline for this pause is July 8, 2025.
It’s a topic of curiosity for many: What impact might the potential release of Switch 2 have? As reported by Financial Times, following the former U.S. administration, Nintendo made some adjustments to its manufacturing, moving production lines to Vietnam and Cambodia due to the stance on Sino-American trade during Trump’s presidency.
The report indicates that approximately half of the new Switch 2 models have been manufactured in Vietnam and Cambodia over the past few months. Previously, tariffs on these countries were set at 46% for Vietnam and 49% for Cambodia, but they’ve just dropped to 10%, taking effect immediately. In principle, this reduction could potentially allow Nintendo to maintain or near the $450 price point for Switch 2, although it remains uncertain until Nintendo provides further comment.
The Switch 2 is set to release on June 5, well ahead of the three-month break that was due to end. It’s expected that talks will happen between now and then to establish fresh trade deals.
Daniel Ahmad, an analyst from Niko Partners, predicts that Nintendo will seize this opportunity by sending more Nintendo Switch consoles to the U.S. However, it’s important to note that a possible price hike or potential supply issues might still be on the horizon, according to Ahmad. Previously, Nintendo had already shipped 2 units of the Switch console to the United States, and these are now stored in American warehouses.
TopMob contacted Nintendo for further clarification regarding the details surrounding the rumored Switch 2.
