Switch 2 pre-orders start on April 8, but there’s a catch. Seems like getting the new Nintendo console won’t be easy

We’ve received fantastic news from today’s Nintendo Direct! There were numerous new game and port announcements, and the C button is turning out to be an amazing feature on the Switch 2. The upcoming console is shaping up to be quite impressive compared to its predecessor, with a potential support of up to 120 FPS. However, one major question remains unanswered: when will pre-orders begin? Many of us were likely expecting them to start immediately following the showcase, but all they mentioned was that more information would be provided on the Nintendo Store. It appears we might need to exercise some patience before we can place our pre-orders.

Want a Switch 2? You might need to meet these requirements

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 begin on April 8, and it’s hitting the shelves officially on June 5. We’re just about to reach the point where we can secure our pre-order! However, as I delve deeper into the details, my excitement is starting to be replaced with a sense of apprehension.

First, let’s talk prices:

  1. The base Switch 2 is going for $449.99.
  2. The Mario Kart World Bundle (which includes a digital copy of the game) is priced at $499.99.

At this moment, you can only express your intent to pre-order the Switch 2 in the US or Canada via the Nintendo Store before April 8th. Afterward, it’s a matter of patience as you wait for the invitation email. However, it is not guaranteed that everyone who registers will be able to purchase one on launch day.

As stated in the FAQ, the initial invitation emails will be distributed sequentially to qualified registrants who satisfy the priority conditions first.

By April 2nd, 2025, it is required that you:

1. Have acquired any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
2. Have maintained a paid subscription for at least one year (12 months).
3. Consented to share your gameplay data.
4. Accumulated a minimum of 50 hours in total gameplay.

If you’re a novice with Nintendo and considering the Switch 2 as your initial console, securing a pre-order could prove tricky. However, on the bright side, even scalpers will find it tough to get their hands on one.

As a dedicated fan, I’m confidently anticipating that the demand for Switch 2 is going to skyrocket, and it might become quite challenging for retailers to keep up with the supply. Here’s hoping this doesn’t lead us back to the scenario we encountered with the PlayStation 5 in 2020, where stock vanished almost instantaneously.
