Nintendo didn’t view the potential Switch 2 as a device focused on “top-tier hardware” for tech enthusiasts seeking greater power. This perspective was expressed by Takuhiro Dohta, a member of Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning and Development Department, during their post-Nintendo Direct Q&A session.
A representative from Nintendo queried Dohta and Kouichi Kawamoto (both belonging to Entertainment Planning and Development Department) regarding their decision to label the system as Switch 2. Kawamoto divulged that the team contemplated naming it Super Nintendo Switch, but they were cautious because Nintendo had previously used “Super” in another system’s title – the Super Nintendo. Moreover, they wished to avoid drawing attention solely towards the console’s technical specifications.
Kawamoto stated, “System Two is our latest release from Nintendo, boasting enhanced capabilities. However, we encourage users not to dwell on the technical details but instead view it as the newest Nintendo creation. In anticipation that it might set a new standard for the Nintendo Switch, we christened it the ‘Nintendo Switch 2’.
Instead, Dohta emphasized that perhaps concentrating too much on the upgraded hardware of the Switch 2 compared to the initial model may discourage those who are primarily interested in enjoying additional Nintendo games.
Since the inception of its development, our goal was to make Switch 2 suitable for a broad range of gamers,” Dohta stated. “I aimed to craft an experience that would be accessible to as many players as possible, rather than one tailored exclusively for high-end hardware enthusiasts. Consequently, we wanted a name that clearly conveyed to potential buyers that if they’re considering purchasing a Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 is the latest system.
To clarify, Nintendo has constructed the Switch 2 with greater processing capabilities than its predecessor. During the Switch 2 presentation, Nintendo announced that the console will offer a smooth 60 frames per second experience for games like Metroid Prime 4, and even in handheld mode, it includes High Dynamic Range (HDR). Additionally, it boasts enhanced speakers and compatibility with 3D audio.
The new Nintendo Switch model is set to debut on June 5, 2025, priced at $450. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 will start on April 9, 2025, through Nintendo’s official online store as well as other popular retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.
