Switch 2 Getting Star Wars Outlaws “Is Pretty Mind-Blowing,” Says Digital Foundry

In a twist of expectations, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition appear to be the games most likely to showcase impressive technical prowess on the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it was Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world game exclusive to current-generation consoles that never made its way to PS4 and Xbox One, that left Digital Foundry pleasantly surprised.

Digital Foundry technology editor Richard Leadbetter brought up the topic of Star Wars Outlaws on Switch 2 during this week’s DF Direct podcast. He stated, “To be honest, I find it quite surprising – Star Wars Outlaws. This game is technologically demanding, using Ubisoft Massive’s new Snowdrop engine. Considering it’s running on this level of hardware, I think it’s absolutely astounding.

Leadbetter wasn’t the only one showing interest in Ubisoft bringing Star Wars Outlaws to Switch 2. The rest of the crew appeared quite fascinated by this decision, too. In fact, Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie described it as a “really thrilling port, almost an impossible port if you will.” This is due to the game’s size and its use of advanced features like ray tracing, which are not typically found on last-gen consoles. Interestingly, there isn’t a PS4 edition available, unlike other third-party titles such as Elden Ring and Street Fighter 6 that did come out for last-gen systems.

As I delved deeper into the gaming world, it became evident that this game is pushing the boundaries like no other when ported to the rumored Switch 2. Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry even stated, “Without a doubt, this is the most technically ambitious game we’ve heard about for the Switch 2.” The team speculates that insights from the Xbox Series S version of Star Wars Outlaws could hint at what we might encounter on Nintendo’s upcoming console. However, Leadbetter warned us based on his experience playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on an Asus ROG Ally, as both games run on the same Snowdrop engine.

Initially debuting on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in August, Star Wars Outlaws chronicles the escapades of Kay Vess within the Outer Rim. Following its launch, Ubisoft has made significant updates to the game, including eliminating compulsory stealth. Moreover, players have been granted story-based downloadable content that allows them to ally with Lando Calrissian.
