Switch 2 GameChat Will Require Phone Number For Security Purposes

To utilize Switch 2’s GameChat, Nintendo will require your phone number. This innovative social platform for their upcoming hybrid system is equipped with online voice chat and the ability to share live gameplay streams among friends. The company explains that this phone number serves as an “extra layer of security” when accessing these features.

Eurogamer noticed that Nintendo’s website indicates text-message verification will be necessary to use GameChat on the Switch 2. The company explains that the phone number connected to your Nintendo Account is used for this security measure. For those under age 16, a parent or guardian must activate GameChat functionality.

On the current Nintendo Switch, voice chat isn’t directly linked to the device itself; instead, a separate smartphone is required for chatting with friends using the Nintendo Switch Online app. Later this month, the app will be renamed to simply “Nintendo Switch” app. This updated app will not only facilitate voice chat but also provide access to Zelda Notes in the upgraded editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on the enhanced Nintendo Switch 2.

Recently, a report highlighted that GameChat offers some useful accessibility options such as text-to-speech conversion for chatting and real-time chat translation. Yet, these features were demonstrated using Japanese, leaving uncertainty about which languages might be available in the imminent version of the system.

On June 5th, the Switch 2 will be released at a price point of $450. However, pre-orders were snapped up incredibly quickly. Despite this, the president of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser, is optimistic that they can fulfill demand for the console throughout the remainder of the year.
