In Episode 8 of Severance Season 2, the title ‘Sweet Vitriol‘ might be familiar to many viewers as they may have already guessed its significance.

In a more straightforward manner, Episode 7 of Severance delved deeply into the emotions surrounding Mark and Gemma’s past, revealing their relationship before joining Lumon and the challenging life she experienced on the Testing Floor, situated under the Exports Hall, which was filled with trauma.

The events are unfolding towards Cold Harbor (Mr. Drummond referring to it as a “momentous occasion in the annals of this world), yet the reason for her presence below and the entirety of MDR remains unclear.

In the interim, the character Harmony Cobel has been absent since Episode 3. She was last seen engaging in a confrontation with Helena, then seemingly vanished (probably heading towards Salt’s Neck). It is possible that she will reappear in Episode 8, and the show has hinted at what her return might entail.

Severance Season 2 Episode 8 has something to do with ether

It’s been indicated that Episode 8 of Severance Season 2 will center around Ms. Cobel, as some reviews before its release have hinted. Interestingly, this episode is expected to run for less than 40 minutes, but ‘Sweet Vitriol’ may actually be a significant hint about the show’s underlying storyline.

To clarify, ‘Sweet Vitriol’ was a historical term used to describe the substance we now know as ether, a chemical compound utilized for various purposes such as fuel, medicine, and recreation, during the 16th century.

Back in the day, I stumbled upon diethyl ether, the first ether ever known to us gamers. This magical potion was cooked up way back in 1540 by a clever German botanist named Valerius Cordus. He whipped up this concoction by distilling a blend of ethanol and sulfuric acid (oil of vitriol, as it was known then). Being a curious cat, he dubbed his discovery “sweet oil of vitriol” (oleum dulce vitriolic), which I think sounds more like a spell from an old-school RPG game than a chemical compound!

At about the same period, the renowned Swiss doctor, Paracelsus, was conducting experiments on dogs. He found out that sweet oil of vitriol served as a means to alleviate pain.

In addition, ethereal substance abuse gained popularity during the 19th and 20th centuries. These gatherings, referred to as ‘ether frolics’, became quite common, where participants indulged in excessive inhalation of the substance.

In this context, ‘Frolic’ is one of the four primary feelings that come into play when discussing Severance, the others being Woe, Malice, and Dread.

In addition, it’s worth noting that Kier Eagan held a position at an ether mill, specifically as a stew-man. It was here where he crossed paths with his wife, Imogene. The plot summary hints at revelations – maybe we’ll uncover more about Cobel’s association with Lumon, which could potentially link back to the ether factory.
