A new survival horror thriller directed by Tommy Wirkola, who also directed Violent Night, is quickly becoming a hit on Netflix. The film launched on April 10th and climbed to the top of the streaming charts in just three days, surpassing popular titles like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Idris Elba’s Beast, which had both recently held the number one spot.
Besides Violent Night, director Timo Tervo (known professionally as Wirkola) is also behind darkly comedic horror films like Dead Snow, the action-fantasy Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, and the outrageous adult animated musical Spermageddon. His newest film features a seaside town attacked by bull sharks after a powerful hurricane causes widespread flooding.
The new Netflix thriller, Thrash, is currently the most popular movie on the platform after premiering on April 10th. Originally intended for a cinema release by Sony in 2024, the film ultimately became a Netflix exclusive.
Is ‘Thrash’ Worth Watching?
With stars like Phoebe Dynevor, Djimon Hounsou, Whitney Peak, and Alyla Browne, the movie Thrash has a crazy concept that’s grabbed a lot of attention – it’s currently the most popular film on Netflix. The idea of sharks attacking people in their homes is definitely exciting, but unfortunately, the movie doesn’t offer much substance beyond that basic premise.
Critics didn’t love Thrash, giving it a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it one of director Wirkola’s lowest-rated films. Unfortunately, audiences disliked it even more, with a score of only 28%, suggesting the shark thriller didn’t resonate with viewers. According to Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com:
The biggest problem with this film isn’t that the characters are silly or make bad decisions. It’s that it feels incredibly uninspired and lacks any real suspense or even the fun you’d expect from a low-budget thriller.
Okay, let’s be real – this isn’t going to win any awards. But if you just want to switch off and watch some silly, over-the-top shark mayhem, you could definitely do worse. It’s no Jaws, obviously, but Thrash delivers enough shark attacks and gore to please fans of the genre. And, like everything director Wirkola does, it’s surprisingly funny – I found myself laughing out loud a couple of times. It’s pure, ridiculous fun.
Tommy Wirkola Will Be Back This Year With ‘Violent Night 2’

Wirkola, the director of Thrash, isn’t stopping there. He’s already planning a sequel to his popular 2022 action-comedy Violent Night which will be released this December. The original Violent Night was a big success, earning $76 million – almost four times its production cost – and is considered one of the director’s best films.
David Harbour is back as Santa Claus in Violent Night 2, alongside returning and new cast members including Daniela Melchior, Kristen Bell, Jared Harris, Joe Pantoliano, and AEW champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman. The film will be released in theaters on December 4th by Universal Pictures.
