As a longtime fan of the Dexter series, I’m both excited and skeptical about the announcement of Dexter: Resurrection. The original show was a groundbreaking and unique take on the anti-hero genre, with Michael C. Hall delivering an exceptional performance as Dexter Morgan. However, the ending left many fans feeling unsatisfied and closed-ended.
At the San Diego Comic-Con event, Showtime surprised fans by unveiling a fresh Dexter TV project titled “Dexter: Resurrection,” featuring the return of Michael C. Hall. Set in current times, this new installment is the latest addition to the Dexter series franchise.
In the finale of Dexter: New Blood (released in 2021), Dexter was found lying motionless in the frigid snow. However, it appears that he didn’t truly perish.
Hall told Variety that he’s only allowed to comment with “it’s really cold” regarding the new series, titled “New Blood,” which contrasts the original Dexter’s Miami heat with a much colder location. The plot and setting of “Resurrection” remain undisclosed at present.
As a devoted fan, I’d express it this way: I was sure Dexter Morgan was gone for good, as confirmed by his creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips following the events of “New Blood.” But let’s face it, in Tinsel Town, nothing is ever truly set in stone.
At Comic-Con, a sneak peek was unveiled for Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to Dexter: Resurrection. In this series, set in the ’90s, Michael C. Hall returns with a dual role. He not only stars as Dexter but also provides the narration for the younger version of the character, portrayed by Patrick Gibson.
In a press statement, Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global, noted that Dexter is Showtime’s most prosperous series to date. Consequently, it comes as no shock that the corporation is planning to produce additional shows within this universe.
Starting in Fall 2006, the first season of Dexter, which starred Michael C. Hall as a forensic analyst with a dark secret, debuted. Over eight seasons, this intriguing series followed Dexter’s life as a serial killer hidden within the police force. The final episode drew mixed reactions, as it sent Dexter off to live as a lumberjack in the wilderness.
In Summer 2025, you can look forward to the debut of “Dexter’s Revival.” According to Hall’s statement to Variety, the series will continue exactly from where it ended previously. He also expressed his belief that audiences are drawn to Dexter due to the shared human trait of harboring some inner darkness, though not necessarily to the same extreme degree as committing murder.
In simpler terms, Hall expressed that everyone has their own struggles or flaws, and Dexter’s are more complex than usual. People find it intriguing to be around someone who openly deals with such challenges in an unconventional and morally ambiguous manner. We as an audience can connect with and admire his struggle, even if it involves dealing with a lot of darkness.
In addition, Hall pondered over the potential inclusion of other Dexter characters in Resurrection. This could be in the form of actual individuals or figments of Dexter’s imagination, similar to past occurrences in the show.
He expressed, “I’m not one to rule out anything completely. This world holds unexpected surprises, so I keep an open mind about new possibilities.” Additionally, there are various intriguing figures in his broader context that could resurface.
