Supernatural is Leaving Netflix: What You Need to Know Before It’s Gone!

Prepare yourself for bidding adieu to the Winchester brothers, as Supernatural will be departing from Netflix by 2025. The exact date of its departure has been confirmed, and unfortunately, it’s due to licensing rights issues.

Prior to writing The Boys, Eric Kripke had previously served as the producer in charge of Supernatural, a series that depicted Sam (performed by Jared Padalecki) and Dean (portrayed by Jensen Ackles), who were tasked with tracking down monsters, demons, spirits, and various other supernatural entities.

The show was incredibly successful, spanning an impressive 15 seasons. Although some viewers believe you don’t need to watch beyond the fifth season, it has been on Netflix for five years and remains one of their most-viewed programs. From January 2023 to June 2024 alone, it attracted close to 40 million views.

Unfortunately, one disadvantage of the surge in streaming services is that movies and TV series tend not to stay on a single platform permanently.

Supernatural leaves Netflix in December 2025

Supernatural is expected to leave Netflix on December 18, 2025.

In simpler terms, you’ve got approximately 302 days to complete watching this series before it gets taken down from the streaming service. The series has a total of 327 episodes. If you manage to watch one episode per day and occasionally fit in an extra couple of episodes, you should be able to finish the show by the deadline.

It’s important to note that Netflix hasn’t officially announced this date, but based on the pattern of similar shows like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Jane the Virgin,” it seems likely that this show may be removed from Netflix around five years after its addition, according to What’s on Netflix.

Why is Supernatural being removed from Netflix?

Supernatural is leaving Netflix because The CW didn’t renew its streaming deal with the platform.

In 2011, The CW initially signed a deal with Netflix, granting them the privilege to broadcast over 700 hours of their content, along with upcoming series.

The rights span a duration of four years following the conclusion of any series, be it present or upcoming, from when its airing on the network comes to an end, as stated in the initial announcement.

The arrangement proved advantageous for all involved: Netflix received a steady supply of content, while the surge in its popularity significantly boosted shows like Riverdale.

In 2016, the agreement was updated with minor changes, allowing new shows to appear on Netflix eight days following their final episodes’ airing.

In simpler terms, Mark Pedowitz, a previous executive at The CW, stated that since the groundbreaking partnership in 2011, The CW’s shows have seen great success and wider reach on Netflix. This new agreement not only maintains but strengthens this beneficial connection between our networks.

Instead, The CW decided to move its shows to different platforms in 2019. More precisely, the channel’s owners, ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia, aimed to transfer the content to their own streaming platforms, HBO Max and Paramount Plus.

Just like how Disney opted for self-reliance by debuting Disney Plus instead of relying on Netflix, they’ve decided to focus more on their own platform rather than third-party streaming deals. As a result, series such as Daredevil and the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows produced before Disney Plus are no longer available on Netflix.
