As a horror fan, I’ve always found the supernatural genre delivers some of the scariest movies ever made – think classics like The Legend of Hell House and The Exorcist. What I love is how these films, dealing with things like ghosts, demons, and curses, can be even more unsettling than typical slasher flicks. And thankfully, a lot of these really creepy movies are now super easy to find and watch whenever I want, right at my fingertips!

These films – ranging from independent productions to big-budget blockbusters – consistently deliver scares and keep viewers hooked. The horror genre has really flourished in the 21st century and continues to be incredibly successful.
David Bruckner’s Hellraiser is the Best Since 1987 (Hulu)
Clive Barker created a terrifying world with the original Hellraiser in 1987, introducing iconic characters like Pinhead and Kirsty Cotton. After many poorly received sequels over thirty years, the story was revived by Hulu with a new film directed by David Bruckner. This reboot centers on Riley, a woman battling addiction, who discovers a mysterious puzzle box that unleashes the cenobites – including a reimagined, female version of Pinhead.
Most modern horror remakes aren’t very good, so expectations for this reboot were low. However, the director Bruckner surprised everyone. His film is the best Hellraiser movie since the original 1987 classic, successfully capturing the disturbing and unsettling themes of Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart.
The Conjuring Kicked Off a Warner Bros Franchise (HBO Max)
In 2013, Warner Bros. released a highly successful film based on the experiences of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators. The story follows the Perron family as they move from the city to a secluded farmhouse with their five daughters, hoping for a quieter life. Soon after settling in, they are plagued by a terrifying and violent spirit, leading them to seek help from the Warrens to cleanse their home.

Insidious is Blumhouse’s Best Supernatural Horror (HBO Max)
The 2011 film Insidious revitalized the haunted house genre with a terrifying story. The movie centers on the Lambert family – Renai, Josh, and their three children – who are plagued by frightening ghosts and demons after moving into a new house. Their son, Dalton, falls into a coma, and desperate to save him, the family turns to a psychic medium who can communicate with the spirit world to help them fight back.

Smile is a Traumatizing Horror Experience (Hulu and Paramount+)
The movie Smile starts with therapist Rose Cotter meeting a patient who believes she’s being terrorized by a frightening entity that wants to kill her. After witnessing the patient’s shocking and violent suicide, marked by a disturbing smile, Rose begins to experience the haunting herself. The entity invades her mind, causing her to act erratically and inflict trauma on those around her. Determined to break the cycle, Rose desperately searches for a way to stop the haunting from spreading to others.
If you enjoy truly disturbing horror, this supernatural film is a standout. It’s a terrifying cosmic horror story that explores the fear of losing oneself, and it’s definitely not for the easily frightened. Both this film and its sequel are intensely unsettling and will stay with you long after the credits roll.
It Follows Started the Elevated Horror Trend (Philo)
In 2014, David Robert Mitchell created the critically acclaimed indie horror film It Follows. The movie centers on Jamie, who, after a seemingly normal date, discovers she’s being pursued by a terrifying, supernatural entity that’s transmitted through sexual contact. Now cursed, she desperately tries to get her friends to help her survive as the relentless creature stalks her endlessly.
You can stream It Follows on Philo. This movie was a key part of the rise of more sophisticated horror films in the 2010s, inspiring movies like Smile and The Substance. It’s a truly suspenseful and masterful film that deserves recognition as one of the best horror movies of the 21st century.
Weapons is a Modern Witchcraft Classic (HBO Max)
The story, Weapons, unfolds in the quiet town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania, when nearly all of the third-grade students from Justine Gandy’s class vanish without explanation. With only one student remaining, she quickly becomes the focus of the town’s fear and suspicion, with some accusing her of witchcraft. Afraid for her safety and the missing children, Gandy teams up with a distraught father, Archer, to find them herself.
Along with Sinners, Weapons played a key role in a major comeback for independent films, actually earning more at the box office than many established franchises that year. The movie challenges viewers to try and figure out a scary mystery, but then delivers a shocking twist that’s both unforgettable and heartbreaking.
It Adapts Stephen King’s Creepiest Story (HBO Max)
In 2017, Warner Bros. revisited the story of It for the first time since Tim Curry’s iconic portrayal of Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries. The film follows the Losers’ Club in Derry as they investigate the mysterious disappearances of local children, suspecting a sinister, clown-like creature is responsible. As the friends dig deeper, Pennywise begins to prey on their deepest fears.
The It movies from Warner Bros., along with the HBO series Welcome to Derry, have established Pennywise as one of the most frightening characters in recent horror. These films successfully blend cosmic horror, supernatural scares, and the relatable experience of growing up – perfectly capturing the essence of Stephen King’s storytelling. Even nine years after the first film came out, It remains widely regarded as one of the scariest and best Stephen King adaptations ever made.
