Before the release of Superman on July 11, James Gunn had a conversation with Takashi Yamazaki, the director of Godzilla Minus One. In this discussion, he expressed his admiration for the Oscar-winning film as one of his personal favorites.
In the year 2023, Godzilla Minus One made its grand entrance on movie screens, and director of Superman, James Gunn, has consistently expressed his admiration for Yamazaki’s kaiju masterpiece without hesitation.
During an interview in June 2025, this renowned U.S. director shared that he drew creative influence from the poignant human stories and personal battles portrayed in Minus One’s work.
What makes Godzilla Minus One stand out as the most acclaimed film in the franchise’s 70-year run is its focus on human emotions and genuine character development. Furthermore, in an exclusive interview, James Gunn went above and beyond in his praise, describing it as a groundbreaking work of cinematic art.
James Gunn loves Godzilla Minus One
During a unique video conversation, James Gunn had the opportunity to chat with Takashi Yamazaki regarding his forthcoming Superman movie, and, needless to say, he couldn’t help but express his admiration for Minus One.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but express my admiration for the masterpiece that is Godzilla Minus One. It’s not just a movie; it’s an artistic experience that leaves me spellbound. The director highlighted the remarkable depth of its characters and appreciated the evident “passion” put into its creation. In fact, it has earned a special place among my favorite films over the past few years.
As a devoted fan, I find myself drawn to the fresh take on Superman in the latest film, mirroring the approach of Minus One. My review resonates with the profound and overwhelmingly delightful portrayal of Superman by Gunn. Yet, ever mindful of humility, Gunn was quick to acknowledge the significant influence that Minus One has had.
Gunn emphasized that he believes this movie is groundbreaking. It’s clear that Takashi Yamazaki deeply cares for the characters, and as a result, we become invested in them and their narratives.
Currently, there are just three or four filmmakers worldwide whose work I admire immensely. Among them, Takashi Yamazaki is one.
On July 11, 2025, the latest Gunn’s Superman film hits theaters. Curious about where you can stream this movie? Keep an eye out for that information. Wondering how long it is? The runtime will be announced soon. Additionally, comparing its Rotten Tomatoes score to other Superman movies will be interesting, so stay tuned!
