Superman’s Divisive Post-Credit Scenes Defended by James Gunn

Ever since its premiere on Friday, James Gunn’s Superman film has been garnering praise from both critics and viewers. Yet, certain DC enthusiasts have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the post-credit sequences in the initial DC Universe movie.

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, viewers have come to expect that superhero movies would end with a cliffhanger scene during the credits, hinting at future projects or introducing new characters within the franchise. But in the latest Superman film, Gunn chose to deviate from this pattern, leaving certain fans a little displeased.

James Gunn addresses Superman’s divisive post-credit scenes

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Gunn shared why he opted against adding post-credit scenes connecting Superman to DC Studios’ future plans. Having learned from his time at Marvel, he felt it was best to steer clear of creating potential setups that might not ultimately deliver on their promise.

During my time at Marvel, I discovered that audiences seemed to enjoy the more humorous post-credit scenes from my movies the most. For instance, the scenes featuring Howard the Duck at the end of Guardians and Stan Lee in Guardians 2. He went on to say that he has found, and mentioned previously, that some post-credit scenes set up by Marvel don’t deliver on their promises unless they are certain to do so. If a post-credit scene were related to something in the Supergirl movie, which we know is happening, he would be open to it as long as it was a genuine payoff.

As per Gunn’s explanation, while the post-credit scenes for Superman didn’t leave viewers on a suspenseful cliffhanger, they were designed to offer fans an engaging experience featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Krypto.

He added, “I didn’t want to create scenes without any resolution later in the story. Yet, it was enjoyable for the audience who stayed till the end of the credits to see who worked tirelessly on the film. Therefore, providing them with something seemed enjoyable to me. And that’s what I did, so we included ‘Terrific’ at the end.
