In this engaging partnership between actor David Corenswet and director James Gunn, as showcased in Superman, it’s important to note that not every moment was filled with bright skies and colorful clouds. Corenswet himself acknowledges a particular characteristic he possesses which, on occasion, might rub Gunn the wrong way.
The initiative to create a fresh version of Superman (distinct from Zack Snyder’s DCEU) was initiated as early as 2022, just before Gunn and Safran assumed control at the superhero production house. However, choosing the right actor for Superman is no trivial task.
Instead of merely appearing as a man with a defined jawline wearing red trousers, Corenswet stood out for Gunn not only due to his physical resemblance, but also because he truly grasped and embodied the role’s essence, encompassing hope, warmth, and quiet strength.
Despite the artistic nature of direction, it doesn’t necessarily imply silence on set at all times. For instance, this past week, Gunn openly admitted he didn’t hesitate to tell his main actor to “keep quiet” – not due to anger, but because Corenswet, being a thorough perfectionist, was eager to delve into every minor detail.
David Corenswet asked James Gunn a lot of questions on Superman set
In a recent conversation with Hollywood Authentic, Corenswet shared that he was thorough in probing for insights about his character. Occasionally, these queries led to an exchange of ideas between him and his co-actors.
If asked to jump off a cliff, Corenswet would inquire about the reasons behind it. He prefers to understand the context – why this particular cliff, why at this moment, and where exactly he’s expected to land. In his own words, he just wants clarity on these details.
As a gamer, when it comes to chatting with James Gunn, I can be quite tough to handle. In no time at all, our conversation might seem like a disagreement to others. To put it simply, my approach could come off as argumentative.
He handed me a note that was quite unexpected for the situation, leading us to have a brief back-and-forth exchange. From an outside perspective, it might have appeared as if we were having an argument, suggesting I was reluctant to comply with his preferences.
In the midst of everything, there was a single remark he made – a direct exchange between us. He uttered one phrase, to which I responded, “Hold on. Excellent. I fully understand your intentions.” Afterward, I departed and carried out the task at hand. And that’s exactly what he desired.
“I just wanted that moment where I knew what you were talking about.”
Initially, when stepping onto the film set for the first time, despite gaining confidence as the movie progressed, he openly acknowledged that he had to “feign a bit” of it, confessing, “At that stage, I wasn’t particularly acquainted with James.
Instead of letting the worry about others judging your outfit or hairstyle hold you back, why not fake it till you make it by summoning a bit of confidence? Let’s give it our best shot and channel a touch of that classic Superman swagger.
