In James Gunn’s version of Superman, there was initially a scene where Ultraman hit Krypto the dog (surprisingly true), but this part was removed due to negative feedback during test screenings. However, another controversial scene is still included in the final product.
In just a few days, the original Superman, played by David Corenswet, will have his time to shine. Alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, they’ll kick off a fresh chapter in the DC Universe under the leadership of Gunn’s reimagined DCU.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, one unexpected character is poised to take center stage: none other than Krypto, Superman’s faithful canine sidekick. This guy’s design was inspired by Gunn’s real-life pup, Ozu. Now, before we dive into the action, let me clarify something important – Krypto, unlike his on-screen counterpart, is mostly computer-generated imagery (CGI), so rest assured, no animals were harmed during the filming of this movie!
At an early Superman test screening, it’s not accurate to say that the viewers felt the same as witnessing the scene where Superdog was hit by a DC villain. Instead, they appeared disappointed or upset at this sight.
Superman star reveals cut Krypto scene and its divisive replacement
In the movie Superman, there’s a scene featuring Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica (The Engineer) that was harsh towards Krypto. This particular moment caused a noticeable gasp from the audience.
In a recent chat, Extratv’s Jake Hamilton pointed out an exceptional scene, explaining, “Last night at the screening, many of us, being hardened film critics, often lose our enthusiasm due to daily movie viewing. We usually remain quiet when we see poor performances on screen. However, this time, we sat there in awe.
In this part, you’re less than friendly towards Krypto, and someone nearby exclaimed, “Oh, absolutely not!”
You’re unkind to Krypto in this particular moment, prompting a shocked response of “Oh, absolutely not!” from someone.
Sara Sampaio, who plays Eve Teschmacher, inserted a comment to mention that an even more intense scene was removed from the final edit. “Ultraman’s punch at Superdog (Krypto) was eliminated since it didn’t perform well in test screenings,” she explained.
Farría clarified, “That’s wrong, you don’t hit a dog… I didn’t strike the dog. On the contrary, it was the dog that initiated the attack on me first… I didn’t harm him or cause any damage, I merely ensured he was safely wrapped up in a protective covering.
Ultraman.

So yes, Superman does not include dogs – real or CGI – being punched in any way, shape, or form.
In our chat earlier, Faria shared an interesting tidbit about working with Krypto. It turned out those moments were a bit challenging since Krypto was represented by none other than a bouncy tennis ball on set.
In Krypto’s place stepped Jolene, the canine. She was there handling the lighting and other tasks. However, it wasn’t long before I found myself engaged in a battle with a tennis ball, you understand, and feeling genuinely frightened by that very ball,” she explained further.
I’d need to glance behind me at the tennis ball, and James would shout, ‘You’re absolutely terrified! He’ll eliminate you!’ I’d respond with a gasp, showing quite dramatic facial gestures, and secretly hoping my reaction seems alright.
