As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed a remarkable surge in viewership for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, particularly since James Gunn’s take on Superman hit Max streaming platform. The revival of Superman has sparked a wave of renewed interest in the DC Universe, with several other Superman-related films and series witnessing significant increases in audience engagement. It seems that the Man of Steel is once again capturing hearts and minds!
Superman increases HBO Max viewership for Man of Steel, Peacemaker and others
Last week, it was thrilling to discover that Man of Steel took the lead as the most-watched Superman movie on HBO Max, boasting a remarkable 218% surge in viewership, as reported by Deadline. Interestingly, Christopher Reeve’s first appearance as Superman back in 1978 saw an even more significant week-over-week rise of 332%. Furthermore, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story truly captivated audiences with a staggering 1,206% increase in viewership.
DC series have seen an improvement too. The viewership of Peacemaker Season 1 increased by 91%, reflecting the growing excitement for Season 2 due out in August 2025. This surge in audience interaction across various titles coincides with the international box office success of Superman, which grossed $220 million as of Monday.
In a departure from previous portrayals, Gunn’s interpretation of the character seems to adopt a more playful and upbeat approach. As he shared with Deadline, this version aims to recapture the vibrancy and happiness inherent in Superman’s origins. Since 2022, when Gunn assumed leadership at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, he has been directing Superman, heralding the beginning of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ era for the new DC Universe.
In the main role, we find David Corenswet portraying Superman. Our talented cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult stepping into the shoes of Lex Luthor. María Gabriela de Faría takes on The Engineer’s character. Furthermore, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion are also part of the cast.
The patterns of audience engagement indicate a growing fascination for DC content on HBO Max following the release of Superman in cinemas. Although HBO Max has yet to disclose specific viewing figures, the consistent rise week by week suggests a robust streaming reaction associated with the movie’s premiere.
Currently, James Gunn’s version of Superman is being shown in cinemas, whereas you can stream Man of Steel on HBO Max.
