In a sneaky peek behind the scenes of James Gunn’s Superman trailer, there seems to be a possible tease about a character from the Creature Commandos appearing in live action. The DC Universe began with Creature Commandos, introducing an ensemble of anti-heroes in an animated format that fits within the same storyline as other DCU characters, such as David Corenswet’s Superman and the upcoming Batman in The Brave and the Bold. If the Creature Commandos make a comeback in future live-action DC Universe projects, it could be the same voice actors bringing these titular anti-heroes to life on screen as they do in their animated series.
In their latest assignment, the Creature Commandos successfully wrapped up their mission with significantly lower losses compared to both versions of the DCEU’s Suicide Squad. With only one exception, it’s likely that most members of Task Force M will reappear in the DCU’s “Waller” series. Each character from the team could pop up in various other movies or shows as well. Notably, G.I. Robot is highly probable to feature in the upcoming Sgt. Rock film, given his cameo in episode 3 of Creature Commandos and Sgt. Rock’s own appearance there. If G.I. Robot returns in a future DCU project, it might be in a modern setting where he sports a new body design.
Superman’s BTS Trailer Drops A Hint At What G.I. Robot May Look Like In Live-Action
Superman’s Fortress Of Solitude Robots Are All Practical
In the secret footage of the upcoming Superman trailer, revealed on Superman Day, there’s a sneak peek at the Fortress of Solitude set. Interestingly, James Gunn is seen manipulating a robotic caretaker within the Fortress using his own body movements. The entire robot appears to be tangible and it seems that they used real-time motion capture technology for its creation. By opting for completely tangible, real-life robots in the Fortress of Solitude scenes, James Gunn has introduced an unmatched level of realism to Superman. This choice could imply that the live-action adaptation of G.I. Robot might employ the same technique.
Superman’s Practical Effects Are Perfect For DCU Characters Like G.I. Robot
The DCU May Use More Practical Effects Than Expected
The G.I. Robot is an old-school robot, appearing in both the DC Universe (DCU) and comics. If a realistic approach fits any character, it’s him, whether in his original design or his reimagined version. Moreover, considering how lifelike Superman’s Fortress of Solitude robots are, it’s plausible that other DCU characters might adopt the same practical approach.
In the final episode of Creature Commandos season 1, a new Task Force M team is established, featuring anti-heroes like Nosferata and Khalis. Given their classic horror backgrounds, these characters would greatly benefit from a predominantly or almost entirely practical design, staying true to their roots.
Apart from the Creature Commandos, there are numerous DC characters that could significantly gain from the use of practical effects and makeup. Characters such as Swamp Thing, Clayface, Lobo, Cyborg, and Beast Boy, among others in the DC Universe, present a vast array of opportunities for creating ultra-realistic practical effects. While CGI is essential to ensure consistency, physical props like Superman’s Fortress of Solitude robots contribute significantly to making the on-screen visuals more impactful.
