James Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, has unveiled the initial poster for the eagerly awaited Supergirl film in the DC Universe. This revelation follows the recent cinema release of Superman, where viewers who have already watched the movie were given a sneak peek at Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. Her unexpected appearance has sparked excitement among fans about what the future DCU movie featuring Supergirl might hold.
Who is in the Supergirl poster?
The poster showcases Alcock in a lengthy brown trench coat layered over her Supergirl attire, subtly conveying her character’s atmosphere. It also offers a playful twist on Superman’s famous DC Universe slogan “Look Up,” implying that she might be stirring up turbulence and confusion within the DCU.
From her unexpected appearance in Superman, it’s clear that the portrayal of Alcock will deviate from past live-action interpretations of this beloved comic book character. Previously, the character was depicted by Melissa Benoist on The CW’s Arrowverse series and Sasha Calle in the 2023 Flash film.
The upcoming movie “Supergirl” is helmed by director Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, inspired by the Woman of Tomorrow comic book series created in 2021-2022 by Tom King (writer) and Bilquis Evely (illustrator). Matthias Schoenaerts plays Krem of the Yellow Hills, while Eve Ridley takes on the role of Ruthye Mary Knolle. David Krumholtz stars as Zor-El, with Jason Momoa anticipated to appear as Lobo. The film is set for a theatrical release on June 26, 2026.
Based on Gunn’s statement, the forthcoming film is expected to portray Supergirl as significantly distinct from her cousin Superman/Clark Kent, hinting at a grittier, edgier depiction of the superhero compared to previous representations.
In simpler terms, Gunn stated that the traits of the two characters (Clark and Supergirl) are crucial to their distinct personalities, with Clark having a generally content childhood compared to Supergirl who has had numerous difficulties. The former grew up in a nurturing environment which makes him unique among superheroes due to his lack of dysfunction. In contrast, Supergirl from the DCU, as portrayed in the comics, has faced countless tragedies as her home planet was destroyed and she witnessed many deaths.
