The Supergirl DCU movie has tapped a former DCEU veteran for a major creative change.
The new Supergirl movie, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, will be in US theaters this June. Craig Gillespie directed the film, and Milly Alcock returns as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. She first appeared as the character briefly in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman movie.
What is the creative change to Supergirl?
According to ComicBookMovie, Ramin Djawadi, the composer for Game of Thrones, was initially chosen to create the music for Supergirl. But now, Tom Holkenborg – known professionally as Junkie XL – will be composing the score instead.
Junkie XL is a prolific film composer with a long list of credits. He collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the music for the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he composed the score for Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021. Other notable films he’s worked on include Divergent (2014), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Deadpool (2016), Tomb Raider (2018), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Rebel Moon (2023), and the recent Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), among many others.
The new season of Supergirl begins with a personal attack that forces Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, to team up with a surprising ally. Together, they embark on a grand, galaxy-spanning quest for both revenge and righteousness.
The film stars Alcock alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll. The screenplay is by Ana Nogueira, and it’s based on the 2021 DC Comics miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026.
