Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Teases His Next Video Game Project -- Maybe

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation upon hearing Masahiro Sakurai’s latest announcement. The man behind some of the most iconic fighting games of all time, including the legendary Super Smash Bros., has hinted at a new project that might just be his first game since Ultimate was released back in 2018.

Approximately two years ago, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai started his YouTube channel to share exclusive insights into game development and design with fans worldwide. Now, Sakurai has uploaded what appears to be the last video on this channel, hinting at a potential new project that could be his first game since the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018.

As per Sakurai’s statement, a video game proposal was presented to him in 2021, coinciding with the addition of Sora, the last DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He didn’t disclose specific details about the upcoming project, but hinted that more information might be unveiled soon.

Sakurai expressed through IGN that he was asked to create a game proposal and completed it extremely quickly. Regrettably, he can’t reveal much about the project yet, but if things go as planned, news about it will be shared at some point in time.

Given his recent statements, it seems unlikely that another Super Smash Bros. game is in development by Sakurai. In 2021, he expressed a desire for the series to evolve beyond his involvement and was unsure about where the franchise might head after incorporating an extensive roster of 89 characters, which included Nintendo’s most iconic figures as well as guest characters from Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and others.

Given that all of Sakurai’s previous games have come out only on Nintendo platforms, it appears likely that his upcoming project will also be published by the same company. For now, we just need to be patient and await more information.
