Fans believe a recent trailer for the new Super Mario Galaxy game hints that Nintendo might be building a shared universe of stories, similar to those seen in popular movie franchises. A particular shot seems to feature a character from another Nintendo series.
Following the huge success of the first animated Super Mario movie – which became one of the biggest films of all time – the new Super Mario Galaxy movie is scheduled to be released on April 1st.
As a huge Zelda fan, I’ve been so excited about the upcoming movie! Nintendo’s president recently mentioned they want to create a system that lets them keep making films even after Zelda and Mario, and everyone’s been wondering what other games they might adapt next. We’re all on the edge of our seats to find out!
That brings us to the latest Super Mario Galaxy trailer. While most of the footage has been shown before, one particular frame has caused a big reaction online.
Fox McCloud seemingly spotted in Mario Galaxy – is a Smash Bros movie next?
Within the first two seconds of the video, a character strongly resembling Fox McCloud, the leader of the Star Fox team, appears with Yoshi, Toad, Mario, Peach, and Luigi.
Fox McCloud leads the Star Fox team, a popular Nintendo series that originally appeared on the Super Nintendo. The games follow a group of animal pilots who work together to protect the Lylat system from the villain Andross. Several Star Fox games have been released over time, including an updated version of the well-loved Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 3DS.
We’re not certain it’s Fox, but the white vest, green shirt, and blaster don’t seem to belong to any other character. If it is Fox, the shot seems intentionally framed to hide the back of their head and tail.
Despite the subtlety, fans quickly noticed this detail and started speculating. A popular theory, as one person put it, is whether Illumination is building towards a full-fledged cinematic universe based on Nintendo properties.

In 2023, DanielRPK reported that Illumination, the animation studio, proposed a crossover idea to Nintendo. This pitch involved creating a shared universe, potentially resulting in a large-scale teamup similar to the Avengers, featuring characters from the Super Smash Bros. series.
The idea of a Super Smash Bros. movie isn’t new. Jeff Fowler, who directed Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has said he’d be interested in directing it, especially because of the famous competition between Nintendo and Sega characters.
Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic the Hedgehog, has suggested that a Super Smash Bros. movie is likely in development.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa suggested that the company is open to creating anime series based on its popular games, in addition to making films.
It’s still uncertain what’s next for the Star Fox series, but this recent news has excited fans who have been hoping for a new installment.
