Super Mario Galaxy Leads Family Films’ Box Office Success In 2026

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie started strong at the box office, continuing a trend of successful animated films in 2026. Following the huge success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie – which earned about $1.4 billion globally and became the fifth-highest-grossing animated film of all time – this latest release proves the genre’s continued popularity. Barbie was the only film that earned more in 2023.

The latest installment broadened the scope of the series, introducing fresh settings and characters such as Yoshi, Bowser Jr., and Princess Rosalina. So far, it’s performing similarly to the previous film at the box office. Super Mario Galaxy had a record-breaking opening weekend in 2026, earning $190 million in the US and $372.5 million globally.

The first movie made $204.6 million in the US and $375.6 million globally during its opening weekend. This is just a little behind the performance of the original film, suggesting it’s likely to also reach $1 billion in total earnings. It’s the newest blockbuster of 2026, joining other successful films like Project Hail Mary, Wuthering Heights, and Scream 7.

Plus, Super Mario Galaxy is helping family films have a great year. The genre has already done well in 2026, and several other promising movies are scheduled to come out later in the year.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is The Latest Family Film To Perform Well At The 2026 Box Office

Family movies were huge successes in 2025. Lilo & Stitch earned over $1 billion globally, and Zootopia 2 brought in around $1.87 billion. This trend continued into 2026, with early hits like Sony’s GOAT and Pixar’s Hoppers performing strongly.

Both GOAT and Hoppers received positive reviews from critics. GOAT made $185.5 million globally, but didn’t quite earn back its $80 million production cost. Hoppers performed better, earning $334 million worldwide, though it still needs to make a little more money to cover its $150 million budget.

Even though Hoppers didn’t reach the blockbuster levels of Super Mario Galaxy, it’s a noticeable step up from Pixar’s previous original film, Elio, which barely broke even with a worldwide gross of $154.3 million on a $150 million budget. Both GOAT and Hoppers demonstrate that families still go to the movies, but filmmakers might need to be more mindful of costs.

2026 Has More Family Films With Great Box Office Potential

Even after several family films have already been released, 2026 still holds potential for big box office success with upcoming movies like Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, and Moana.

The recent Toy Story movies have both earned over $1 billion, and Pixar generally sees strong box office numbers with its sequels, as demonstrated by Inside Out 2. If Toy Story 5 maintains the quality of previous films, it’s expected to be a big success.

The new movie, Minions & Monsters, is the third spin-off from the popular Despicable Me series. The Despicable Me films have consistently been successful in theaters, with both Minions and Despicable Me 3 earning over $1 billion worldwide. While Minions & Monsters may not reach that same level of financial success, it’s expected to perform well.

With Moana 2 earning over $1 billion, a live-action Moana remake is likely to do well. Lilo & Stitch proves Disney’s live-action remakes can be very profitable, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already a huge success, suggesting similar potential for these upcoming films.
