Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Trailer Reveals The Man Behind The Hero

As a lifelong Superman fan who grew up with Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, I’ve always admired his portrayal of the iconic character. However, it wasn’t until I watched the first trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story that I truly understood the depth of the man behind the cape.

Since time immemorial, the character of Superman has been closely associated with Christopher Reeve in the minds of many fans. It was in 1978 when Reeve achieved fame by portraying Superman (the Man of Steel) in Richard Donner’s Superman. He continued to play this iconic role across four movies, but the forthcoming documentary, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” offers much more than just a retrospective on his film career. As suggested in the initial trailer below, “Super/Man” delves into the unfortunate accident that left Reeve paralyzed, followed by his struggle and eventual transformation into an ardent advocate for the disabled community.

According to the trailer, Reeve fell off a horse in 1995, which resulted in him being paralyzed from the neck down. In his own account, Reeve describes how his feelings of despair due to his disability were challenged by his wife, Dana Reeve, who affirmed her love for him regardless. They then established the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, a platform to advocate for disabled rights and make a positive impact through their advocacy efforts.

The documentary showcases old recordings and personal videos of Reeve, captured before and following his life-altering incident. These clips encompass moments with Robin Williams, the dear actor who was a friend to Reeve and provided him support after the accident. Remarkably, all three of Reeve’s grown children contributed to this film, including Will Reeve, the reporter, who recently made a brief appearance in James Gunn’s Superman production.

Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui are leading the movie “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” set for a limited theater debut on September 21. A repeat performance will take place on September 25, which coincides with Christopher Reeve’s birthday.
