Sunrise On The Reaping Is Starting To Wrap, And As A Hunger Games Fan, I Could Not Be More Excited

I’ve been a fan of the Hunger Games world ever since I first read Suzanne Collins’ books and learned about Katniss Everdeen’s story. The movies brought that world to life over ten years ago, and I’m thrilled it’s continuing to grow. Following the success of the prequel, Battle of Songbirds and Snakes, in 2023, a new Hunger Games film was announced. Now, Maya Hawke has confirmed that the latest prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, is almost finished, and I’m really excited for it!

I was checking Instagram and saw a fun little behind-the-scenes peek from Viola Davis! She posted a clip of herself just hanging out on set of Sunrise on the Reaping, messing around near the trailers and getting her makeup done. Apparently, she’s playing Wiress, and it sounds like they’re sticking to the book’s depiction of her as an older character, which is cool. She gave a shout-out to the whole creative team, and honestly, it’s got me even more hyped for the movie when it comes out in 2026. Check out her post – it’s a good one!

Though The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes successfully brought us back to the world of The Hunger Games, this new movie feels distinct. It focuses on Haymitch’s experiences during his Quarter Quell Games, which were often spoken of with reverence in the original trilogy. As fans, we already care about Haymitch, thanks to Woody Harrelson’s performance in the earlier films. Seeing the origins of his character – a journey that’s particularly compelling in the books – is something I’m really looking forward to.

The upcoming prequel film will also feature younger versions of familiar characters, and the cast is fantastic. Jesse Plemons will play Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning will offer a fresh take on Effie Trinket, and Kieran Culkin is perfectly cast as Caesar Flickerman. With Francis Lawrence returning as director – he’s directed most of the Hunger Games movies – fans can be confident that this film is being made by someone who truly understands and cares about the franchise.

I was already so hyped for the new Hunger Games movie, but seeing Maya Hawke’s post really reminded me how soon Sunrise at the Reaping is coming out! The first four films did such an amazing job adapting the books, so this new one has a lot to live up to. Still, I think the story itself is strong enough to make Sunrise a really great return to Panem. And honestly, the trailer looked fantastic – I have a good feeling this movie is going to deliver!

Catch The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping in theaters on November 20, 2026. While you wait, you can rewatch the original Hunger Games films on HBO Max.
