Sundance’s World Cinema Jury Prizewinner ‘Cactus Pears’ Bought for North America Ahead of New Directors/New Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Strand Releasing has purchased the rights for “Cactus Pears,” a movie by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, in North America. This Indian film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, is a dramatic portrayal of gay themes. It will be screened this week as part of the New Directors/New Films festival.

The movie marked the inaugural screening of a Marathi-language film at Sundance, and it became the first Indian fictional film to secure the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film.

The story revolves around Anand (Bhushaan Manoj), a city-dwelling young man, who, after the passing of his father, journeys back to his rural family home. Here, he grapples with the expectations of his family concerning his unmarried state. He finds comfort in the company of a fellow resident, a farmer named Suraaj Suman, who also faces similar circumstances.

Marcus Hu from Strand Releasing expressed his excitement and pride saying, ‘We’re delighted to present ‘Cactus Pears.’ This film has a wide-ranging appeal that we believe will strike a chord with viewers in North America.'”

Or simply:

“Marcus Hu of Strand Releasing shared his joy and pride, stating, ‘We’re excited to share ‘Cactus Pears,’ a film we think will resonate with audiences across North America.’

The agreement was made between Jon Gerrans from Strand Releasing and Neeraj Churi, one of the film producers at Lotus Visual Productions. Strand has plans for an active festival debut for the movie before its fall theatrical release. The film is scheduled to be screened at the San Francisco festival and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria festival, among others.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled that the team behind “Cactus Pears” has chosen Strand Releasing to distribute our film. This company is renowned for its rich history of releasing Oscar-nominated movies and official entries for the Best International Feature Film category. This fact alone highlights their unwavering dedication to quality cinema, a trait I deeply respect.

The story originated from a peaceful nook in India; it’s heartening to realize it’ll soon be shared with viewers worldwide, gracing screens as it should,” the producers expressed together.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite Parisian distributor, MPM Premium, has successfully sold our movie across significant international markets. From the heart of Europe, it will be screened in Germany, Austria, Switzerland (thanks to Salzgeber), and Spain (courtesy of Filmin).

Kanawade expressed that it’s indescribable to know a movie so intimate and meaningful to us will be shared globally by audiences everywhere. Initially, when my team and I embarked on this project, we had no clue about our future prospects, but we were optimistic.

Strand Releasing, known for its support of art house and LGBTQ+ cinema, has now joined forces with us to distribute ‘Sabar Bonda’ (or ‘Cactus Pears’) in North America. This collaboration is particularly exciting following our success at Sundance Film Festival.

Established by Marie-Pierre Macia and Jean-Charles Mille, MPM Premium has been championing queer cinema, including Kenyan drama “Rafiki” directed by Wanuri Kahiu and the Portuguese choral film “Wolf and Dog” by Cláudia Varejão. Now, MPM Premium is in discussions to secure distribution rights for “Cactus Pears” in France, the U.K., Scandinavia, and other regions.

As a passionate admirer, I’d like to express that the captivating films ‘All We Imagine As Light’ and ‘Santosh’ have ignited an exciting wave in Indian independent cinema, piquing the attention of international buyers. However, it’s not just the buzz these films have created, but the profoundly moving and heartwarming modern love story presented in ‘Cactus Pears’ that truly resonates with global audiences, making them eager to connect with this beautiful tale.

Cactus Pears” is a joint production between India, the UK, and Canada, with Neeraj Churi, Mohamed Khaki, Kaushik Ray, Naren Chandavarkar, Sidharth Meer serving as producers, while Jim Sarbh takes on the role of co-producer. Ilann Gigard is the executive producer for this project.

Strand Releasing is currently showing a variety of films, such as Christophe Honoré’s “Marcello Mio,” Rithy Panh’s “Meeting with Pol Pot,” and Trương Minh Quý’s “Viet And Nam.” These are joined by other titles.
