It’s time to refresh your Letterboxd watchlist! The Sundance Film Festival is leaving its longtime home in Utah after this year and moving to Boulder, Colorado. To celebrate its 41 years in Park City, festival organizers have compiled a list of 101 essential films that first premiered there, and shared it with Vulture. The list includes a diverse range of movies, from acclaimed documentaries like Hoop Dreams to comedies like Napoleon Dynamite and Oscar-nominated dramas like Past Lives.
The festival’s recommended watch list starts with the 1985 film Blood Simple by the Coen brothers and extends to the 2025 college drama Sorry, Baby directed by Eva Victor. While most years of the festival are represented, the list skips 1987, 1997, 2008, and 2024. Because the programmers limited themselves to one film per director, they faced tough decisions—for example, they chose Boyhood over Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater, a choice that’s sure to spark debate among movie lovers. The complete list of films is available at sundance.org.
According to the festival programmers, this list represents just a small selection of films that showcase the history of the Sundance Film Festival. The films are presented in chronological order, with only one title per filmmaker, and all premiered at Sundance. Creating the list involved careful consideration and narrowing down a much larger pool of options. While they wish they could include every film – recognizing each one’s contribution to the festival and independent cinema – they hope this serves as a starting point for viewers to create their own personal Sundance Film Festival favorites list. So, bundle up and enjoy the films!
