Music Box Films has obtained the rights to distribute “Zodiac Killer Project,” a true-crime documentary directed by Charlie Shackleton, within the United States. This movie won the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance for its engaging narrative and skillful storytelling.
The movie was previously shown at SXSW, First Look, True/False, and CPH:DOX festivals, and it has its LA premiere on Sunday at the LA Film Festival. Music Box plans to release it in theaters later this year, followed by a home entertainment release.
The “Zodiac Killer Project” is described as a clever reinterpretation of the true crime genre, crafted by a filmmaker who playfully critiques its familiar themes and stereotypes with a discerning eye. In this film, Shackleton uses Bay Area scenery, artistic background footage, and historical materials to narrate the tale of an unfinished documentary about the notorious and unsolved murders from the late ’60s. The movie is likened to an unexpected reawakening that combines thoughtful musings, spine-tingling tales, and a melancholic atmosphere of uncertainty.
Music Box commented: “We were astonished by the intelligence and originality of ‘Zodiac Killer Project’ when we first saw it at its Sundance debut. This film appeals to a wide audience – those who crave true crime documentaries and those who believe that an excessive amount of sensational streaming docs signals the downfall of civilization. Charlie has come up with a unique approach to a familiar genre – marking the beginning of meditative, avant-garde investigative journalism.
Shackleton expressed: “The ‘Zodiac Killer Project’ emerged from the remains of a movie destined never to be seen. Each opportunity it has to play before an audience is significant for me. I’m excited to collaborate with Music Box Films in bringing it to cinemas, and I will undoubtedly disappoint even more people who are eager to learn anything about the Zodiac Killer.
The movie produced by Catherine Bray, Anthony Ing, and Shackleton will be made available in Canadian regions through Films We Like. The rights for its U.S. distribution were successfully negotiated by Brian Andreotti from Music Box and Jason Ishikawa at Cinetic Media on behalf of the film creators.
