Sundance 2025 Lineup: Jennifer Lopez, Benedict Cumberbatch and a Boatload of First-Timers Head to Penultimate Park City Edition

As a cinephile with a soft spot for independent cinema, I find the Sundance Film Festival lineup to be a veritable treasure trove of storytelling mastery and artistic innovation. With such a diverse array of films hailing from all corners of the globe, there’s truly something for everyone in this year’s selection.

41st Sundance Film Festival, covered in snow and shrouded by doubt about its final installment in Park City, is set to return to its Utah location at a high altitude, starting from January 23rd to February 2nd, 2025. This prestigious event for independent cinema in the U.S. will be presented live and in person.

The primary goal of the programming team is still centered around “discovering” new talent, as evident in the fact that 36 out of 87 features were led by first-time directors, and three out of six episodic selections. However, this upcoming edition is significant because it welcomes back some well-known figures.

27 years following “Gods and Monsters,” director Bill Condon re-emerges with his rendition of the stage musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” This new adaptation stars Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, and Jennifer Lopez. Festival favorite Ira Sachs is back, honoring an unsung hero of underground art through “Peter Hujar’s Day,” featuring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall.

Director Clint Bentley introduces viewers to “Train Dreams,” starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. Following the release of “A Love Song” two years ago, Max Walker-Silverman presents “Rebuilding,” featuring Josh O’Connor. In the multi-generational family drama “Jimpa,” Sophie Hyde (“52 Tuesdays”) brings acting veterans Olivia Colman and John Lithgow onto the screen. Lastly, Andrew Ahn, director of “Spa Night,” introduces “The Wedding Banquet,” a unique story about a queer green-card marriage involving Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone.

In other slots, Alison Brie and Dave Franco delve into a codependent bond in “Together,” showcased during Midnight alongside Dev Patel’s thriller “Rabbit Trap.” Benedict Cumberbatch experiences mental deterioration in “The Thing With Feathers.” Meanwhile, Juliette Lewis takes on multiple roles, featuring in both “Opus” and “By Design,” while Chloë Sevigny stars in “Magic Farm” and “Atropia,” two productions under Luca Guadagnino’s belt.

Although Kim Yutani, the Director of Programming at Sundance, highlights some well-known names, she emphasizes that her team is actively seeking out fresh perspectives. In fact, all of the filmmakers chosen for both U.S. and World Dramatic Competition are making their debut in these sections. To accommodate more premieres, Yutani and her team have reduced the Spotlight slate (previously used to showcase non-premieres at Park City) and added space for approximately half a dozen new premieres instead.

Yutani mentions that there will be special moments, but what truly excites them is the chance to have actresses like Rose Byrne, featured in Mary Bronstein’s new film ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,’ alongside Eva Victor. This is Eva’s first competitive role, as she writes, directs, and stars in her own production ‘Sorry, Baby.’ This project is produced by Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski.

From a pool of 4,138 entries, the chosen lineup aims to promote diversity and inclusivity. It’s worth noting that less than a third of the initial pool were directed by women (approximately 47% of the selected directors identify as women), while fewer than one-fifth of the submissions came from LGBT filmmakers (around 29% of those chosen identify as LGBT).

In terms of selecting the movies for our lineup, Yutani emphasizes that they pay close attention to the diversity of represented countries and the demographics of their filmmakers. This is why films originating from less common places such as North Macedonia or Tunisia catch their eye, making them eager to incorporate these unique productions into their program.

Instead of relying on established filmmakers, as Cannes and Venice sometimes do by featuring films from well-known directors like those who made “Anora” and “Joker”, Sundance prioritizes discovering new talent. They prefer to introduce rising stars such as Sean Baker and Todd Phillips (who gained prominence after winning awards at Sundance for their movies “Tangerine” and “Frat House”) rather than using the limited spotlight to boost already successful careers, focusing instead on unveiling the next promising independent filmmaker.

Yutani highlights “Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake)” by a UCLA graduate student as one of this year’s exceptional finds. This collection includes numerous films originating from the African continent – such as “Khartoum,” “Where the Wind Comes From,” and “How to Build a Library” – and the programming team believes that the international lineup is more powerful than ever before. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this category, which has been strengthened by connections made by their scouts at film festivals and co-production markets in years past.

As Hernandez explains, Sundance’s primary purpose is to encourage more artists and provide additional funding for their work and programs. However, due to escalating costs in Park City and concerns about accessibility and attendance returning to pre-pandemic levels (with 72,840 people attending in 2024 compared to a high of 116,800 in 2020), the organization is now seeking a different location.

As a movie critic, I must admit that the world of film festivals and arts organizations has been confronted with some truly daunting shifts – from evolving audiences and institutions to alterations in funding. However, I am heartened by the indomitable spirit displayed at Sundance, as we forge ahead with our strategic planning for the future festival, visualizing a vision that is both forward-thinking and uniquely ours.

Sundance Film Festival is planning to reveal its decision about its upcoming location – among Boulder, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City – in February 2025 following this event’s conclusion. For those unable to attend in Utah, the festival will transition into a hybrid format on January 30th (the second Thursday), broadcasting approximately 60% of its films to the general public online.

Hernandez mentions we have another two years in Park City, and he aims to make these last two years the most exceptional yet. He strongly advises not to miss out on Park City this year, as the program is outstanding, offering numerous opportunities for discovery, with many distinguished alumni returning. The anticipation for an even better experience next year adds to the appeal.
