Wealthy tycoons and influential entrepreneurs often spend their summers taking a break from their visits to Portofino, refueling their private jets, and then flying off to Idaho for the yearly Allen & Co. summit held at Sun Valley instead.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve managed to get my hands on the exclusive guest list for this year’s gathering of the elite, and let me tell you, it’s an impressive lineup! Tech magnates, Hollywood bigwigs, and influential politicians are all gathered here, each one seeking out a handful of substantial investors.
Among them are well-known figures such as Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy, Jeff Bezos (the company’s founder), Mark Zuckerberg from Meta, Tim Cook who heads Apple, Sundar Pichai as the CEO of Alphabet, and the co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters from Netflix. These gentlemen lead corporations that boast market caps significantly larger than those found in Hollywood.
However, a significant group of veteran media executives such as David Zaslav (recently unveiling plans for Warner Bros. Discovery’s bifurcation) and Brian Roberts from Comcast (currently involved in shedding underperforming assets at NBCUniversal), may be contemplating a trip to the mountainside retreat, potentially with negotiations on their minds.
Shari Redstone, whose potential sale of Paramount Global to Skydance could depend on resolving conflicts between President Trump and “60 Minutes,” is not listed among the invited guests. Other previous Sun Valley participants, such as Oprah Winfrey, seen at the Tony Awards, and Elon Musk, who’s been sparring with the current White House resident over social media, are also absent from the guest list. It seems that Warren Buffett, who recently stepped down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, won’t be making an appearance either.
Disney’s Bob Iger, Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, Josh D’Amaro, and Jimmy Pitaro are all under scrutiny, as people look closely at their actions to determine their potential positions in the competition for future leadership roles within the company.
I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Sun Valley, a haven designed for high-powered executives seeking respite from their fast-paced lives. Here, you’ll find barbecues, bike rides, and hikes that offer a welcome change of pace. While it’s not mandatory, many choose to leave their entourage behind, although some opt to keep them nearby at local hotels. The allure of Sun Valley isn’t just about leisure; these business titans arrive with mergers on their minds. It’s where Disney sealed the deal for ABC/Capital Cities, Comcast and NBC Universal chose to join forces, and Time Warner entered into a partnership with AOL – some of which have proven more successful than others.
Alex Karp, the founder of Palantir, who stands at the crossroads of Silicon Valley and surveillance, was extended an invitation. It is also expected that other tech giants such as Bobby Kotick (former CEO of Activision), Dara Khosrowshahi (CEO of Uber), Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Brian Chesky (CEO of Airbnb), Daniel Ek (CEO of Spotify), and Evan Spiegel (CEO of Snap) will make their way there.
This group, referred to as Hollywood’s elite, comprises producers Brian Grazer and Jason Blum, Bryan Lourd from CAA, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, Charlie Rivkin of the MPA, and Ravi Ahuja, head of Sony Entertainment. Additionally, Liberty Media’s John Malone, known for his affinity towards deals, is part of this circle. Lastly, Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch from Fox Corporation chose an opportune moment to make a profitable exit.
Barry Diller, recently returned from his book tour, and Diane von Fürstenberg were once again granted exclusive access, just like Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates, frequent attendees at Sun Valley. If Allen & Co. requires suggestions for refreshments, they could ask Ruth Rogers, proprietor of the River Cafe, who has also received an invitation.
At Sun Valley, attendees are treated to exclusive discussions on a variety of topics such as environmental issues and geopolitics. However, these secretive sessions do not exclude certain members of the media. In this particular instance, individuals like Fox News’ Bret Baier, CNN’s Erin Burnett and Anderson Cooper, The New Yorker’s Evan Osnos, sports analyst Bill Cowher, The Washington Post’s David Ignatius, CBS News’ Gayle King and David Begnaud, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Becky Quick of “Squawk Box,” The Free Press’ Bari Weiss, and the renowned Diane Sawyer are granted special access to these events.
Politicians aspiring for national roles often attend events at Sun Valley, and this year is no exception. Notable figures like Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin, former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore – all potential presidential candidates – are expected to mingle with the wealthy donor class. Additionally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who aims to regain control of the legislative chamber in 2026, is also scheduled to attend, potentially seeking financial support.
Keep in mind that just being on the guest list doesn’t guarantee that a billionaire or world leader will physically attend Sun Valley. Regardless, getting invited is considered the highest form of recognition.
