Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3 Tackles Mental Health in a Way You’ve Never Seen Before!

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Sullivan’s Cross season 3, episode 3.

In the initial two seasons of “Sullivan’s Crossing”, the narrative centered around Maggie and Sully mending their bond. However, season 3 shifts its focus to a unique portrayal of another parent-child relationship, offering a depth and subtlety not commonly seen on television. The series is inspired by Robyn Carr’s books, who is also known for “Virgin River”. Unlike the books, which highlight different characters in each installment, the TV show predominantly revolves around Maggie, Sully, and Cal Jones, Maggie’s romantic interest.

In Sullivan’s Crossing, Cal sought refuge from the heartache of his wife’s passing, yet his own childhood was challenging too. His upbringing was shaped by an unmedicated father suffering from schizophrenia. As the story unfolds in season 3, episode 2 of Sullivan’s Crossing, it is revealed that Cal and Maggie decide to pay a visit to his estranged parents, Jed and Marissa, after learning about his father’s cancer diagnosis. The meeting between father and son turns out to be challenging, as they each hold vastly different perspectives on their shared past.

Cal’s Father’s Schizophrenia Has Finally Taken Center Stage In Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3

Cal & Maggie Travel To Cal’s Hometown After His Father’s Cancer Diagnosis

In the third season of Sullivan’s Crossing, Cal’s connection with his parents plays a significant role. Growing up, they were all aware of Jed’s condition and his choice not to use antipsychotic drugs, though they didn’t understand why. This influenced their unconventional lifestyle, such as living in a repurposed school bus during Cal’s teenage years. A flashback in episode 2 of season 3 depicts Jed pushing a young Cal beyond his physical limits due to a perceived threat, believing that Cal needed to be strong enough to deal with it.

In the unfolding narrative of Sullivan’s Crossing, I find myself delving deeper into Cal’s past, specifically his struggle with schizophrenia. The glimpse we got in episode 2 hints at how pivotal both of Cal’s parents will become as we move forward, culminating in our encounter with them both in episode 3. Previously, Cal was the one who aided Maggie in her healing journey in her hometown. Now, it seems that Maggie might play a crucial role in helping Cal mend his relationship with his father, right here in the place where he grew up.

Jed & Marissa Had No Good Choices When Cal & His Siblings Were Growing Up

Jed Could Be Present But Erratic, Or Medicated But A Zombie

In one of Chad Michael Murray’s most notable roles, Cal nurtures intense anger towards both parents, and discovering that Jed is on antipsychotics only intensifies his rage. Cal bears a deep-seated bitterness due to his parents’ failure to empathize with his viewpoint, but he also fails to acknowledge that his father had limited options at the time. Previous versions of the antipsychotics Jed was prescribed years ago helped moderate his extreme behavior, yet left him seemingly lifeless.

Instead of being unpredictable, he had become more consistent, yet unfortunately, he wasn’t there for his kids often. In a tough decision, Jed (to some degree also Marissa) opted for the less problematic scenario that would benefit him and the family the most. Jed yearned to be an engaged, loving father, not someone lost in himself. Life could be wonderful when things went well, but Jed and Cal had contrasting views on how content the family truly was. Cal harbors resentment towards his father’s current stability, yet with advancements in medical science, the latest wave of medications have fewer harmful side effects.

Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3, Episode 3 Was Sympathetic To Both Cal & Jed, A Rarity On TV

Jed Is On Meds Now With Little Time Left To Repair His Relationship With His Children

Sullivan’s Crossing presents the challenging topic of mental health with a unique level of depth. In episode 3 of season 3, we witness a unique pairing of compassion, as characters Cal and his father Jed are portrayed with understanding, without justifying past hurts. The tense relationship between them is delved into through heartfelt, candid exchanges between Cal, his mother, and Jed. The emotional layers are profound, as each character seems correct and incorrect in their own ways, yet none effectively communicate their feelings.

Marissa’s recent threat to leave Jed unless he began taking his medications might be linked to his cancer diagnosis and a determination to enhance all aspects of his well-being. Although his terminal prognosis doesn’t change the past, it prompts a moment of reflection, as Cal might start viewing the past differently if he could see Jed’s struggles more vividly. The series “Sullivan’s Crossing” sensitively explores mental health issues, demonstrating that healing may be achievable—yet complex—when time is limited.
