Suits LA Just Found the Show’s Best Way to Get Renewed for Season 2

As the final two episodes of Suits LA‘s season approach, it seems that the show might have found its winning formula. While Episode 11, titled “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” may not be the most suspenseful hour on its own, its closing 15 minutes hint at a potential solution to all the lingering plot threads so far. This resolution offers an opportunity for a daring narrative move, which is exactly the kind of bold storytelling that Suits creator Aaron Korsh excels at.

In this installment, titled “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” Stuart Lane remains at the forefront as Josh McDermitt’s character grapples with issues post-David Bowie incident. Simultaneously, Amanda Stevens is given more focus, her decision to represent Sierra Carson, a teen actor, causing her additional stress. However, it’s the climax of the episode that will captivate viewers, potentially altering the course of the series for good.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 11 Opens the Door for a Much Needed Reunion

How Ted and Stuart Can Fix More Than One Relationship

As a cinephile, I found episode 11 shedding light on Stuart Lane’s inner turmoil. The narrative cleverly unfurls when Stuart reacts excessively to a minor car accident near his children’s school. While the plot isn’t the most compelling, it effectively highlights Stuart’s frayed nerves, pushing him to behave in ways that go beyond simple irritability and veer into the dramatic.

However, by the climax of the episode, the series successfully drives home its message: Stuart is struggling mentally, and he himself recognizes this fact. Ted Black and Samantha Railsback are now privy to his state as well. Ted suggests a “business trip” for Stuart, providing an escape, and Samantha consents to support him by deceiving Stuart’s wife, Helen about his whereabouts.

One intriguing possibility for Suits LA is reuniting Ted and Stuart, given the information at hand. Initially, the concept of a single firm branching off had significant dramatic promise at the start of this season. However, it’s led to a fragmented series, as the writers struggle to justify why characters from both sides keep intersecting. Moreover, Railsback Lane has never been fully explored as a law firm, leaving viewers unfamiliar with its inner workings beyond whatever Stuart or Rick Dodson are currently handling. Reuniting everyone under one roof could help streamline the narrative as well.

Moving forward, it’s crucial for character development and improving the overall quality of the show. Combining Samantha, Ted, and Stuart could bring out their best traits, as they seem to complement each other well. For instance, their scenes together are more engaging compared to when they’re apart. However, both characters – especially Stuart and Ted – can sometimes lack depth. The initial episode provides a good illustration of this; while Josh McDermitt’s NSYNC rendition is entertaining, it highlights the risk of over-exaggerating Stuart’s character. On the other hand, Ted can come off as unpleasant when portrayed individually, unlike the lovable Harvey Specter. By reuniting these ex-friends, their character growth could be facilitated, adding a much-needed layer of depth to Suits LA. This reunion could serve as a powerful catalyst for Season 2, fostering a more impactful and compelling series overall.

Suits LA Episode 11 Brings Back Two Fan-Favorite Guest Stars

Patton Oswalt and Brian Baumgartner Return for More Laughs

As a fan, it’s exciting to witness the comeback of these two actors in Suits LA, as they’ve been the ones who’ve masterfully struck the delicate balance between reality and fiction that the show is aiming for with its celebrity appearances. While their initial disagreement was staged for Baumgartner, things take a turn when he pushes for a role in Oswalt’s next film, leading to an actual spat. This squabble eventually leads Oswalt to challenge Ted to perform his own stunts in an upcoming action movie.

In this series, Patton Oswalt effectively establishes a significant role for himself. Subsequent flashbacks set in 2010 reveal that he was the one who initially encouraged Ted Black to delve into entertainment law. An intriguing duet between Ted and Stuart (a performance that justifies the ticket price) serves as the backdrop for this development. Oswalt intervenes to protect Ted’s younger brother Eddie, which in turn prompts Ted to stand up for Oswalt when the situation intensifies. This portrayal offers an engaging account of how Ted entered the field of entertainment law, though it seems unlikely that Ted would be unaware of Patton Oswalt or that Oswalt would closely follow mob trials to the extent of recognizing Ted’s face.

Unfortunately, the incorporation of Yvette Nicole Brown into the show as herself isn’t quite successful – not because of anything she did wrong. Instead, there seems to be a confusion in the writing regarding the dynamic between Brown and Stuart, particularly after the car accident. The dialogue between them feels overly exaggerated, making viewers question whether it’s meant for humor or as an indicator of Stuart’s mental health struggles. As a result, the whole situation appears absurd to viewers, which is unfortunate because Brown is a talented comedic actress. To make this subplot more convincing, the script should tone it down a bit so that the tension between them feels realistic and Stuart’s emotional response to their rivalry seems more relatable. When he describes it as feeling like “a gun to my head,” viewers are less concerned about his well-being than they are at rolling their eyes.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 11 Teases a Possibly Big Change

Will Ted and Samantha Get Back on Track?

In the closing scenes of Suits LA Season 1, Episode 11, there’s a scene subtly left ambiguous to spark debate. Ted visits Samantha at work to tell her that Stuart is departing, and after she consents to cover for her partner, she proposes they share a drink. This small step symbolizes progress in their relationship; it’s heartening to see them display mutual respect given that most of Samantha’s growth has been depicted through flashbacks, when she and Ted were still together. Viewers, however, are left guessing about who Samantha is today, as she appears successful on her own terms, but we don’t fully understand her character or her identity beyond her past relationship with Ted.

However, the dynamic between Ted and Amanda also raises questions: Is this single encounter indicative of just Stuart’s storyline, or could Suits LA be exploring some aspect of their relationship? If the writers are indeed planning something, it remains unclear what that might be. As recently as Episode 10, hints were dropped about a romantic connection between Ted and Amanda Stevens; however, Ted’s thoughts still seem to be with Samantha. Let’s hope the creative team isn’t setting up a love triangle. A reconciliation between Ted and Samantha, either as friends or more, appears more plausible than a relationship between Ted and Amanda. So far, there is no basis for Ted and Amanda to become romantic; they’ve discussed their chemistry, but viewers have yet to witness it. And once again, overcoming their differences and moving forward together would make for an intriguing narrative choice for Ted and Samantha.

In a fresh twist, Suits LA’s Season 1, Episode 11 paves a unique route that distinguishes it not only from this series but also from most television content currently airing. There’s potential for the narrative to grow more unified and for characters to develop additional dimensions. The allure of the original Suits lay in its ability to venture into unexpected territories, and now, the spinoff has the opportunity to follow suit and leave viewers genuinely astonished, at a particularly opportune moment.
