A multitude of events unfolds in Suits LA Episode 1, as it lays the groundwork for numerous storylines throughout the season. For instance, we see Stuart Lane’s act of betrayal, deal with Ted’s father’s matters, and, surprisingly, learn about what’s happening with his sibling, Eddie.
Six years have passed since the TV series Suits concluded its run, wrapping up the tale of Mike Ross and Harvey Specter. Yet, thanks to its resurgence in popularity on Netflix, NBC is giving the franchise a fresh start with a spin-off titled Suits LA.
According to its title, our story has moved towards the western coastline. The central character is Ted Black, who shares the leadership of Black Lane with Stuart Lane. As the narrative unfolds, Ted finds himself grappling with a potential merger, coming to terms with his father’s impending demise, and managing a power struggle between two promising associates, Erica and Rick, as they vie for a promotion.
The situation spirals out of control extremely fast, leaving many struggling to follow along. If you found it challenging to keep track of all the characters in Episode 1, don’t worry – this summary aims to clear things up for you.
Everything that happens in 2010 in Suits LA Episode 1
Episode 1 of Suits delves into the past, offering crucial insights from 2010 regarding Ted’s career as a prosecutor, his professional life, and his bond with his father through brief flashbacks.
At the start, we find Ted paying a visit to Billy, who now seems uncertain about testifying against the ruthless crime lord, Pellegrini.
Despite your history of taking lives, I admired your courage in sacrificing yourself for your daughter, Ted remarks, as he holds a damning report that might imprison Tina. Aware of the danger that could befall him, Billy understands that testifying could lead to his own demise, yet Ted warns him that failure to uphold their agreement may result in Tina’s arrest.

In our gaming world, I couldn’t help but feel surprised, turning to Ted and saying, “Dude, I always thought of us as just playing buddies.” To which he replied, “Buddy, we may be gamers first, but we’re friends too. That’s why I’m putting my in-game character on the line for you.
Then, suddenly… Billy’s house erupts in flames. Later on, we find Ted at the hospital, sporting wounds from the falling debris. At the hospital, he is confronted by his father, a man with whom he shares a chilly rapport. Despite the lack of comprehensive backstory, it’s evident that his father abandoned him and his brother Eddie during their early years. Their reconnection occurred only after Ted completed law school.
In this particular moment in time, Ted’s father holds a significant position at a law firm, and he proposes making Ted a partner from the very first day if he decides to join him. However, Ted declines, stating, “I won’t trade my integrity for defending criminals, and I’m not willing to jump ahead in line.” This rejection does not sit well with his father who implies that Ted should not have left him with their mother because it made him “less strong.
Later at the hospital, Samantha, Ted’s coworker, drops by to ensure Ted is alright and if he can make it to a work-related event that evening. She departs, and Ted learns that Billy has passed away from his wounds. In response, Ted concocts a scheme. He convinces the doctor to go along with a ruse where they will pretend Billy is still alive (the specific reasons are unclear, but I assume it’s because he wants to utilize the potential of Billy testifying before people discover he’s deceased).
What’s going on with Lester Thompson?
In the current time, we encounter Stuart, who leads the criminal defense at Black Lane. He learns that Lester Thompson has been apprehended for murder, prompting him to suggest the need for a crisis manager to prevent the situation from resembling the OJ Simpson scandal.
It seems that Lester is accused of murdering his partner, but he maintains his innocence. He demands a credible alibi from Stuart, who suggests he plead self-defense since it increases the chances of being found not guilty – yet Lester flatly declines.
In the remainder of the day, Lester encounters Ted. He suspects Stuart harbors doubts about him, which leads him to prefer Ted not to take up his case. Ted advocates for his associate, asserting that he’s one of the top defense attorneys in America (a claim he will soon come to regret, but I’ll elaborate on that later), and Lester finds confidence in Ted’s opinion.
As the first episode nears its end, it’s clear that alliances have been shattered: Stuart has deceived Ted, leading to their company falling apart. Ted confides in Lester that he must cut ties with Stuart and expresses his belief that he didn’t commit any murders. Essentially, Ted suggests Lester can choose between Kirk Cousins or Patrick Mahomes (a reference that was likely penned before Super Bowl LIX).
Toward the finale, Ted revisits New York to catch up with an old work acquaintance named Kevin. Desperate for assistance on a case involving Lester, he engages in a friendly yet subtle power struggle with Kevin. Eventually, after some banter about repaying debts, Ted proposes a fee of $400,000 for Kevin’s expertise.
John Amos wants an audition
In the midst of all the other events, there are a few brief moments where John Amos appears, portraying himself as one of Black Lane’s regular customers.
John is hoping Rick can arrange an audition for him, as he’s not confident that Ted will assist him in this matter. Rick, being a lawyer like himself, isn’t in a position to act as an agent. However, John sees this opportunity as a chance to take action rather than passively waiting for an invitation – he wants to “give it his best shot instead of just sitting around and hoping the phone will ring.
After Rick departs from the company (I’ll elaborate further in the next part), Ted encounters John during the late hours of the night. John reveals that he developed a father-son relationship with Rick which was bound to have unfavorable outcomes, and suggests that if Ted wishes to progress in his life, he must learn to forgive his father. (I’ll revisit this topic later.)
All of the betrayals!
Essentially, Ted has decided to combine Black Lane with Samantha’s company. To mark this occasion, Ted and Stuart go out for a drink together. It seems that any past disagreements between Ted and Stuart have been resolved, as they now appear to be on good terms again.
Instead, it turned out that the whole situation was a deception designed by Stuart to pilfer the company’s employees and exclude Ted from the picture. The following day, all the offices on the 25th floor were mysteriously absent, leaving only the entertainment and sports departments behind.
Ted assigns Rick and Erica the responsibility of securing clients before they lose business, while he deals with Stuart. Addressing Ted, he says, “You claimed I was a lion and you were a flea… this company would be insignificant without me,” implying that he might reveal the truth about his departure from New York if Ted decides to sue him.
Unluckily for Stuart, Ted secretly recorded his derogatory comments about three prominent lawyers with influential clients. Later, Ted played the recording for one of them and persuaded him to switch allegiance from Stuart to himself. That evening, Ted made a surprise visit to Samantha, who revealed that the plan was Stuart’s idea in the first place. Despite not harboring animosity towards her, Ted vowed to pursue her relentlessly with all his resources.
Afterward, there’s Rick and Erica, two competitive colleagues vying for the position of head of entertainment at the company. Ted had committed the role to Rick initially, but he also acknowledges that Erica could be more suited for the job. In the long run, he opts to appoint them as joint heads, and Rick appears content with this shared leadership arrangement.
In an unexpected turn, I learned that Erica had been keeping a secret from her associate Leah – she’s actually working for Stuart behind the scenes. Thinking this was the real deal, Leah spilled the beans to Ted in hopes of scoring a promotion. As it turns out, though, Leah was tested on her loyalty, and it was Rick who had agreed to work for Stuart, not me.
Erica insists on becoming Ted’s partner since she will manage his clients while he focuses on Lester’s case. Despite his reservations about her, Erica aims to disprove him. The following day, rather than disciplining Leah, Erica gives her another opportunity (recognizing that it was a shrewd decision).
Who is Maggie Grace playing?
In Episode 1, we’re introduced to Amanda Stevens, portrayed by Maggie Grace. Unlike the rest of the team, she focuses on free legal work from an office she rents in a building owned by Ted. Despite Ted trying to get her to help him with client acquisition, she declines. He even offers her $100,000, but she makes it clear that she doesn’t require such financial incentives.
Afterward, he visits her workplace and queries about her approach towards representing criminals whom she believes are innocent. “Everyone should be given the opportunity to plead their case,” she responds. Be mindful of the playful undertones between them as the story unfolds further.
Yes, Eddie was dead the whole time
Eddie, Ted’s sibling, makes an appearance at the beginning of the episode. He shakes Ted awake from a nightmare and offers to prepare him breakfast. Additionally, Eddie assists Ted in getting ready for bed when Ted staggers home intoxicated following his evening escapade with Stuart.
Yet, during his visit to the hospice to see his ailing father, Ted fails to offer forgiveness. “It was the Yankees game,” he recalls, “I was just 13 and Eddie was 17. I understood that you didn’t want him there.
However, you kept it secret from him. That day, your paternal role shone brighter than ever, marking the most memorable day in his young life. Not only did you take a snap of us, but you also had it beautifully framed.
Later on, after our encounter led to your conviction, you confided that your final wish before incarceration was to spend that night with me. However, when the moment arrived, you chose to let them execute Eddie instead. My cherished brother, a man who lived his life without causing harm to anyone, my own sibling whom I held dear. You claimed it was for my safety, yet you failed to attend his funeral. He was more than just your brother; he was your son.
Indeed, it’s accurate to say that Eddie has been deceased throughout this entire period. Despite his physical absence, Ted finds solace in recalling the memories of him, yet it’s important to note that Ted’s dear friend passed away long ago.
