Title remake: The High-Definition Remasters of Suikoden I & II are Now Available Globally
After much anticipation, the remastered versions of Suikoden I & II: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars have been released worldwide on PC and consoles. These classic PlayStation RPGs have received some significant updates to make them compatible with modern platforms. Prior to its launch, I’ve had an opportunity to try out the PC version on my Steam Deck and ROG Ally devices to gauge its performance.
When it comes to remasters of older games on PC, there can sometimes be issues with improper post-processing and low-quality upscaling effects. However, in the case of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, everything seems near perfect on PC, except for one minor glitch that may or may not impact your experience. In this article, we’ll explore the PC port, discuss how the remaster performs on handhelds, and provide solutions to resolve the mentioned issue if necessary.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster PC graphics options
Before delving into Steam Deck’s performance, it’s worth noting that the PC version of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster offers a relatively basic setup. The graphics can be adjusted between fullscreen and windowed modes, with resolutions ranging from 540p to 4K, and v-sync can be toggled on or off. You can make these adjustments by clicking on the gear icon during the game selection screen, or pausing the game and selecting options from the menu. However, it’s important to note that you cannot customize controls within the game itself, but you can choose from among three different control types. These settings primarily affect the actions of the face buttons, as well as the triggers which are assigned to some of the face buttons.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Steam Deck gameplay impressions
The game Suikoden I & II HD Remaster has been labeled as playable on the Steam Deck but not officially verified by Valve. This is because while the game can run on the Steam Deck’s native resolution, it doesn’t automatically adjust to that setting. However, it seems there might be a miscommunication here, as Suikoden I & II HD Remaster does not natively support 800p at this time. If we assume Valve meant 720p instead, it’s interesting to note that We Love Katamari Reroll also received the same label despite supporting 800p. It’s important to clarify that Suikoden I & II HD Remaster does not natively support either 16:10 or 800p resolutions. Given its performance and visual quality on the Steam Deck, it seems reasonable for it to be verified, but there might be an issue with its default resolution. If it launches at 1080p instead of 720p on the Steam Deck, Konami could easily resolve this problem.
When I launched Suikoden I & II HD Remaster on my Steam Deck OLED for the first time, I found that the background scrolling wasn’t fluid. At first, I thought there might be some problems with the game engine, but then realized it was because the game is limited to 60fps and I was playing it on a 90hz display (the default setting). Enabling v-sync and seeing the frame rate counter jump to 90fps gave me some optimism, but this actually slowed down the game’s movement. The scrolling issue persisted as well. To resolve this, I lowered my Steam Deck’s screen refresh rate to 60hz and played at 60fps, resulting in smooth movement, scrolling, and correct speed. After more testing, it appears that the game also has issues when played at 144hz. To address this, I played at 120hz when trying out the PC port on my 1440p 144hz monitor.
On a Steam Deck LCD device, you won’t encounter any problems related to the high refresh rate. However, it may cause issues on the 90hz OLED display and external monitors set at 144hz. Apart from this specific issue, I’m quite satisfied with the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster PC version. Despite being minimalistic, it effectively delivers on its purpose.
If you aim to enjoy Suikoden I HD Remaster on your Steam Deck while it’s connected to an external display, achieving 4K 60fps isn’t feasible due to issues with the world map causing drops. However, when testing 1440p and 60fps, it seemed like a steady 60fps might be achievable during exploration and in the open world, but combat could lead to drops down to the upper 40s at worst. Switching to 1080p provides a smooth, locked 60fps experience while docked.

During my gameplay tests, I found that Suikoden II HD Remaster required slightly more system resources than the initial game, even from the early stages near the waterfall. If you choose to play in docked mode, you might encounter occasional frame rate drops below 60fps at 1080p during exploration, and the frame rate may dip into the high 40s during combat scenes. However, when playing on the Deck at 720p resolution, no such issues were encountered after thorough testing of both games.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Steam Deck recommended settings
When playing Suikoden I & II HD Remaster on Steam Deck, there are two crucial points to remember: Firstly, ensure that the game is set at 720p resolution rather than 1080p. Unfortunately, this remaster doesn’t natively support the 16:10 aspect ratio, so if it appears to do so, the game is actually being cropped from both sides. Secondly, be aware of the 60fps and 60hz issue I discussed earlier if you’re playing on a Steam Deck OLED or any high refresh rate display. If you prefer playing in docked mode, the best options are already covered elsewhere.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster on ROG Ally
On the ROG Ally, with its 120hz screen, navigating through Suikoden I & II HD Remaster was effortlessly smooth. The device starts at 1080p resolution without any issues when set to 60fps (v-sync off). Both games function well and provide an enjoyable gaming experience on the portable device. However, if you activate v-sync, Suikoden II may occasionally stutter at 1080p. In summary, this remaster performs well on the ROG Ally, making it a reliable choice for your gaming enjoyment.
The current PC version of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster performs well and looks good, although it’s not overly feature-rich. I’ve had a fun experience playing it on my Steam Deck and ROG Ally devices. However, there seems to be an issue with high refresh rates affecting certain frame rates and displays, which is the main problem with this PC release at the moment. I hope this issue can be fixed soon.
