Actress J. Smith-Cameron has been confirmed for a role in the forthcoming Hulu series focusing on the Murdaugh family, according to Variety’s exclusive report.
In the yet-unnamed true crime drama, Smith-Cameron is set to join established stars Patricia Arquette and Jason Clarke on screen.
The show is inspired by real-life events surrounding Maggie and Alex Murdaugh, with additional input from Mandy Matney, a journalist who also produced the “Murdaugh Murders Podcast.” Arquette has been cast as Maggie, while Clarke will portray Alex.
For several decades, the Murdaugh family held significant sway over the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, using their legal and political clout extensively. However, for nearly a decade, allegations of criminal activity against the family have surfaced, encompassing everything from financial fraud to murder. Beyond the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast, they have been the focus of numerous documentaries and news specials.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be portraying the character of Marian Proctor, an elegant older sister who resides in Charleston – quite the contrast to my rural Hampton life as Maggie. Her urban presence serves as a crucial outsider’s viewpoint on the Murdaugh circle, offering me valuable insights about their sphere of influence.
Known primarily for her portrayal of Gerri Kellman in the critically acclaimed TV series “Succession,” which spanned its four-season duration, Smith-Cameron has garnered significant recognition. Her performance on “Succession” led to consecutive Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Beyond this hit show, her small screen appearances encompass projects such as “Hacks,” “In the Know,” “True Blood,” and “Divorce.” In cinema, she’s starred in films like “Margaret,” “Vengeance,” “The Year Between,” and “Nancy.” Additionally, Smith-Cameron is a Tony Award nominee with an impressive theater background. Most recently, she made her West End debut on the London stage with “Juno and the Paycock” at the Gielgud Theatre.
She is repped by Principal Entertainment LA, Gersh, ID Public Relations, and Schreck Rose.
Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr share the roles of co-creators and executive producers for this series. Additionally, Fuller will take on the role of showrunner. Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund will also serve as executive producers under their Eat the Cat label, with Matney also joining them in this capacity. The studio responsible is Universal Content Productions (UCP), where Antosca and Eat the Cat are currently under an all-encompassing agreement.
