As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pulse-racing pleasure of catching a glimpse of the electrifying teaser for “Chien 51,” a heart-stopping dystopian thriller masterfully directed by Cedric Jimenez. This gripping tale features two of France’s most captivating talents, Adèle Exarchopoulos, who enthralled us in “Beating Hearts,” and Gilles Lellouche, a star we know from the gripping saga “The Stronghold.” I can hardly wait to see this high-voltage production unfold on the big screen!
I’m recognized for my direction of the modern thrillers “The Stronghold” and “November,” which were screened at Cannes. In “Chien 51,” I delve into the lives and minds of law enforcement officers, but this time in a future world dominated by artificial intelligence.
Dog 51 reunites Jimenez with French producer Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi, a company under Mediawan, and distributor Studiocanal. The project is inspired by Laurent Gaudé’s 2022 novel of the same futuristic thriller title.
The story takes place in a somewhat near future Paris, where the city is split into three areas that denote social standing, each with barriers controlling travel between them. A groundbreaking AI named Alma governs the law enforcement sector and manages it, reenacting crime scenes and estimating the likelihood of culpability, thereby shaping the course of investigations. When Alma’s creator is slain, Salia and Zem – two detectives from contrasting zones who share little in common – are compelled to join forces to solve the murder mystery.
The film, titled “Chien 51,” represents the most daring project yet for Jimenez and carries an estimated budget of around €40 million. Filmed over a span of 18 weeks across Paris, Marseille, and a studio where sets were constructed, this highly anticipated French movie is slated for release in 2025. Featuring extensive visual effects, stylish set designs, and some breathtaking scenes involving up to 500 extras, the film promises to be a spectacle of cinematic artistry.
In a recent interview with EbMaster, Jimenez revealed that instead of choosing a distant future setting, he imagines “Chien 51” taking place in a world that exaggerates current societal patterns we see today, such as widening social disparities and limitations on personal freedoms, along with the integration of artificial intelligence in public services.
Jimenez, along with his collaborator Olivier Demangel, wrote “Chien 51”. StudioCanal takes care of worldwide distribution for the movie, with plans to show it in cinemas.
