A pupil, previously saved from Mount Fuji, needed rescue once more when he ventured back to retrieve his mobile phone.
Nestled in Japan, Mount Fuji towers impressively at an astounding 3,776 meters high, drawing adventure-seekers and mountaineers from every corner of the globe.
2024 was a year when I found myself in need of assistance more times than I’d care to remember while tackling Mt Fuji. Unseen Japan reported an impressive 46 rescues that year, but it wasn’t even the highest number – that record goes back to 2018 when 51 hikers like me found ourselves in trouble on the mountain.
For the year 2025, that figure could potentially increase, given a recent incident where a student needed to be rescued from the mountain not once, but twice within a four-day period.
Student had to be rescued twice in one week
As reported by the source, on April 22, the individual was coming down from the mountain and unfortunately misplaced his safety equipment designed for traversing snow securely.
Four short days after my initial rescue mission, I found myself trudging back up the mountain on April 26th. My mind was preoccupied with a crucial item left behind – my phone. The forgetful gamer in me had neglected to pick it up during my first ascent.
Living in Tokyo, a man was found to be climbing the mountain by himself in an attempt to recover his lost phone. As he ascended, he started experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness and decided to descend. Unfortunately, while making his way back down, he collapsed. A passerby noticed this and dialed the rescue services for help.
Luckily, the man was conscious and able to talk to his helpers in Japanese.
There’s some ambiguity about whether the man took his phone when he descended from the mountain, suggesting it’s possible that he might have returned and needed rescuing again without any real need for help.
As reported by Unseen Japan, Mount Fuji’s climbing season is yet to begin, since it typically spans from July through September.
It’s not the first occasion where a Chinese student has caused a stir online. Back in February, a tech student garnered widespread attention on Chinese social media when he unintentionally ignited his dormitory while attempting to conceal an “inflatable companion.
